HEY NPR, I'm glad you covered this odd form of money, but you DRASTICALLY under-reported the level of electrical energy usage - WASTE - that 'Bitcoin Mining' causes. It's a significant contributor to the Climate Disaster. Transactions should be taxed for their CO2 footprint.
Years ago my son wanted me to invest in Bitcoin , he was right but I couldn’t understand it , and I don’t invest in anything I can’t understand .
Let's just think about if there are anythings that can be truly decentralized......
For bitcoin to be a bubble, the millions of people globally who value it and the decentralized community of miners who maintain it would have to devalue it... why would they stop valuing a currency that protects them from political fluctuations and banking oppression?
Most of the arguments here against Bitcoin can be made against gold, lol

Does anyone want to buy one of my Bitcoin for $50,000? I need to pay off one my student loans. I’m still so confused on Bitcoin. Are the holders of Bitcoin able to sell their “coin” for cash? Or is this on paper? Who is buying it at $50K for just one? Warren Buffet?
Isn’t it using massive amount of electricity? Like 25% globally or something ridiculous. ((I mean I could be WAY off, but it’s still ginormous))

If you want to know why it’s gone up so much, research tether and the recent settlement to a court case in New York State. They are pumping it up with air.
High cost is connected to increasing difficulty of mining more of the currency, leading to higher computer hardware and electricity costs for these miners. What happens to the price of the cryptocurrency when all have already been mined and why is that so? Not simple to answer.
