Sam Jordison mulls the possibility of a self-published version of the The Guardian's Man Booker Prize alternative, Not The Booker.

It’s hard to deny that self-publishing cleaves fast to Sturgeon’sthat 90 percent of everything is crap. How would a self-publishing award with open nominations find the ten percent that isn’t crap without it becoming a horrendous drag on resources?

Having said that, there is good stuff that isn’t being noticed and it would be great to find that and would make it a worthwhile thing to do. If we didn’t find anything, if we hated everything we were sent, that would be interesting as well. It would prove publishers’ case as it were. I'd hope and expect to see some really good self-published material as I know it exists, however, but every result would be interesting. It’s getting to that result that’s the problem.

A self-published Not The Booker would need a different system. Open votes would simply result in the authors most capable of mobilising their army of fans getting the nominations, rather than less well known authors getting a nomination based on the quality of their work.
