Chloé Zhao wins Best Director, Motion Picture for 'Nomadland,' which features Frances McDormand as a widow who takes to the road after losing her job and finds hope among fellow wanderers GoldenGlobes

A road movie like no other, “Nomadland” is a modest masterpiece like no other.

Beautifully unadorned and heart-in-your-mouth stirring, it’s leisurely yet urgent, with a singular tone that lies somewhere between elegy and hope. Set in the vastness of the West and deeply in the American grain, it was written, directed and edited by Chloé Zhao, a filmmaker who was born and raised in Beijing.

Fern is new at nomadism. She had a good office job at a sheetrock plant in Nevada and was married to a good man, but her husband died and the plant shut down. With no savings to fall back on and no safety net for adequate support, she has joined a transient community of men and women in their 60s, 70s and 80s who roam the country in vans or RVs, grabbing gig work where they can find it. Ms.

When people ask how she is, Fern says firmly, almost sharply, “Good,” thereby cutting off further discussion. She isn’t good. The most obvious reason is that she is homeless and vulnerable, though she insists that she’s merely houseless. Her van, which she has named Vanguard, isn’t good either—it’s old and unheated, and the only question about the engine and transmission is which will die first.

What makes the film such a special achievement is the merging of complementary sensibilities. Ms. Bruder’s book staked out the territory and brought its shifting population to life with calm, empathetic reporting. Ms. Zhao has taken this rich source material into the realm of plain-spoken drama and clear-eyed poetry by doing more of what she did so remarkably well in her previous feature, “The Rider,” a 2017 film about a young cowboy in South Dakota struggling against his implacable fate.
