A student worker shares how not increasing tuition for the fall semester is helping her.

PUBLISHED 4:46 PM CDT Jun. 23, 2022For the fall 2021 semester, the Texas A&M Board of Regents approved a 2.1% tuition increase. As federal student loan payments remain paused and Americans battle inflation, the push to make college education more affordable continues to grow. "I am diabetic, type 1. I was diagnosed when I was six years old back in Puerto Rico and it was one of the main reasons for why we moved.

While a number of her peers are off enjoying summer break, you'll find Castro on campus at A&M-Central Texas. She's a student worker. "I'm working this summer just to help out with tuition, with books and things like that," Castro said. "For my classes I am taking summer courses, not only to get ahead, but to stay on track for my program.""The amount of classes I can take a semester depend on the cost of college," Castro explained.

As director of Student and Civic Engagement, Alison Mathe knows how big an impact the cost of college can have. "It's going to have long term effects for our students," Mathe said. "So not having an increase in tuition is going to allow more students to continue their education, not have to worry as much.""Even being able to get a degree depends on the cost of college. It's something I'm very thankful that's happening," Castro said.
