Cage weighs in on the use of guns on film and TV sets in the wake of the fatal shooting on the set of the film, ‘Rust.’

Without directly invoking Alec Baldwin’s name, Nicolas Cage recently offered some strong views on the shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, saying that movie stars should know how to safely use guns because that’s part of “the job profile.”

Writer Rebecca Keegan broached the issue of guns on Hollywood sets by asking Cage, 58, and the other actors: “People are talking about safety more in the industry now because of the tragedy that happened on ‘Rust.’ There’s some discussion of whether there should be guns on sets at all. What do you think?”

“People don’t like the word movie star,” Cage began. “We want to be humble actors. But a movie star is a bit of a different kind of presentation because you need to know how to ride a horse. You need to know how to fight. You’re going to do fight scenes. You need to know how to ride a motorcycle. You need to know how to use a stick shift and drive sports cars, and you do need to know how to use a gun. You do. You need to take the time to know what the procedure is.

In a Dec. 2 interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Baldwin said he was trained to rely on specially trained crew members to safely prepare and load guns that are used for scenes.
