New Zealand Weightlifter Laurel Hubbard Set To Become First Transgender Athlete To Compete At The Olympics

to compete in the super-heavyweight 87 kg category with her selection being made possible by a rule change introduced in 2015.

The 43-year-old Hubbard will be the oldest weightlifter at the games but is considered a genuine medal hopeful after having won silver at the 2017 world championships and finishing sixth in 2019 after recovering from a career-threatening elbow injury. Hubbard is eligible to compete at the Olympics under the International Olympic Committee’s guidelines that allow transgender athletes to compete in women’s competitions as long as their testosterone levels are below 10 nanomoles per liter for at least 12 months.

In a statement issued through the New Zealand Olympic Committee , Hubbard said she was “grateful and humbled” by the kindness and support that she has received.Noting that Hubbard had met the IOC and the International Weightlifting Federation's selection criteria NZOC CEO Kereyn Smith said: “We acknowledge that gender identity in sport is a highly sensitive and complex issue requiring a balance between human rights and fairness on the field of play.

I’m all for everyone being treated equally but that simply DOESN’T translate to sports. She enjoyed men’s T lvls her whole life including puberty. Some of that male advantage is PERMANENT in her. It’s science. Even 8 yrs later Laurel enjoys advantages over every other woman.

So if a woman weightlifter takes testosterone for 10 years gains muscular mass but stops before the competition, to achieve low hormone levels like him, that makes it fair towards other women?

The only justified way for this is to create a new section transgender woman and transgender man. Other wise it would be an extreme biased and unjust with the game

The beginning of the end for female sports - within 10-15 years there will not be a single biological woman in top tier of sports...ok I guess as long as 0.06% of population are happy.

This is a lack of respect to real women. What is the point of separate categories? The only reason was to prevent biological advantages. If they allow this, they should have only one category.
