For nearly 3 decades, City Bakery in NYC enjoyed cult status and now, it's gone

City Bakery owner Maury Rubin and members of The Rockettes unveiled a special edition hot chocolateFor nearly three decades, City Bakery in New York City enjoyed cult status.

In an Instagram post, Rubin wrote, “It’s true. City Bakery has closed. What a time. What a world. What a loss for all of us. We’ll miss this forever. Thank you New York.”“This is not what we wanted. Not what we expected. It’s where a bad path has led. A loss in so many layers,” Rubin wrote in the Instagram post.

He blamed the financial problems in part on the company’s decision to begin a sister bakery concept, Birdbath Green Bakery. “We have too much debt, no matter that we are a two-generation New York favorite.” Normal debt relief “has not been an option,” he said. Meyer has since closed the original Union Square Cafe and moved several blocks away to East 19th Street, where the cafe has the same feel of the original, and seems to be doing well.

“Our good name has been taken from us in this saga, but the spirit, the creative, the pleasure, the surprise, the hand and heart that built City Bakery will be back,” Rubin said. This summer, Dean & Deluca closedwhich once stretched from New York to Washington and across the country to California.
