Texas running back Bijan Robinson is partnering with Lamborghini Austin. New NIL deals like Robinson’s with a luxury car dealership won’t come under scrutiny under new NIL “guidance.”AUSTIN — Last Thursday, ascendant running back Bijan Robinson announced a new partnership with Lamborghini Austin. To celebrate, the face of Texas football sent out a picture of himself sitting in the passenger seat of a jet-black Lambo to more than 150,000 combined Twitter and Instagram followers.
“While the NCAA may pursue the most outrageous violations that were clearly contrary to the interim policy adopted last summer, our focus is on the future,” board chair and University of Georgia president Jere Morehead said in a statement. “The new guidance establishes a common set of expectations for the Division I institutions moving forward, and the board expects all Division I institutions to follow our recruiting rules and operate within these reasonable expectations.
But groups such as the Clark Field Collective, which has a pot of at least $10 million to offer Texas athletes for NIL activities, and Horns With Heart, which will offer $50,000 in “annual financing” for every scholarship offensive lineman, could come under scrutiny. “I think what the NCAA is going to have to do is really pick and choose its battles,” Heitner said. “I do expect there will be some penalties issued. I don’t expect them to be against the athletes. Which then causes a question, what exactly is the deterrence factor here? Maybe we see some disassociation between certain boosters and universities, and perhaps some universities have the punitive effects based on what these collectives have done. It boils down to an antitrust issue.
