New Mexico's governor has signed a bill to legalize recreational marijuana. Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham says the change will create new jobs and could free about 100 people from prison.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announces her decision to sign a law that legalizes recreational marijuana outside the state Capitol building in Santa Fe, N.M., on Monday, April 12, 2021. The Democratic governor described the law as a victory for social justice and a potential boon for economic development. Her decision makes New Mexico the seventh state since last November to legalize adult possession and sales of cannabis for recreational use.

The signed bill gives the governor a strong hand in oversight of recreational marijuana through her appointed superintendent of the Regulation and Licensing Department. Legislators rallied behind a legalization framework from state Rep. Javier Martínez of Albuquerque that provides automated procedures for expunging past pot convictions.

In New Mexico, regulators will be able to put a cap on marijuana cultivation quantities for years to come and impose a per-plant state fee of up to $50 a year. The new law mandates child-proof packaging and defers to employers on whether workers can indulge in marijuana.

No wonder I've been smelling weed all along Central.

She should resign now.

Come on Federal Government. What are you waiting for? Minnesota, land of liberals. Where are you?

Good job

GovRonDeSantis how about following NM in recreational Marijuana. LegalizeMarijuana

I mean new Mexico has a serious meth problem, not weed.

Arriadna And release a bunch of stoners out into your neighborhoods.

Great. The people need more choices than alcohols the state sells.

now the Feds need to. Then it becomes investable and insurable.

will those enjoying the legal right to enjoy marijuana and kill make quads/paras also enjoy the right to be financially responsible for victims/families, 2 include ins. & college education or is being newly destitute only for victims/families to enjoy?

100 seems low

I had to peer at that pretty good. Only 100 people are in jail for it? I don't know how many people are in prison for it here, but they arrest up to 20 thousand a tear according to NORML.

Next, legalize prostitution too. Perhaps, legal prostitution would reduce violence against women.

🤔

And in Montana, after we voted to legalize it, the Republican legislature is trying to overturn our votes.

Meanwhile the governor of South Dakota is fighting their publicly voted legislation that passed.

Good news for potheads

It is beyond the point in time to simply legalize. I lived in Albuquerque for about a year. And meth was literally more accessible than pot. I watched as DAILY you had full blown shootouts in the south valley. Meth has truly destroyed that city. The Sandias are absolutely amazing

Looking at you GovAbbott

This will free the whole country from mental slavery

Still won’t get my weed stocks to go up

deray I’m surprised it’s only 100...

It's only the Democrats who make sensible decisions for their states.

JUST FUCKING LEGALIZE IT ALREADY!! ...not decriminalize, not ignore...LEGALIZE AND TAKE IT OFF THE SCHEDULE!! Each day passes while they drag their feet and more people's lives are unjustly ruined...you all started this war, you lost that war...give it up and legalize it now...

Putting people in jail for a fucking weed ya can grow, while beer and alcohol can be bought anywhere never made sense to me. Well done New Mexico.

👏👏👏 LegalizeIt

Why would it free anyone from prison? If you broke the law before it's made legal you should have to do your time. Criminal record should not be wiped clean

What a bunch of bullshit

I’m proud of our governor 👍

All of the people in jail for non-violent marijuana crimes should be released.

It's a start....

GovTimWalz

Do you think this is what people really need right now?

Texas needs to get with the times smh
