The Garden State is now working to on deploying safe, equitable, affordable, sustainable, and efficient transportation to serve mobility-marginalized groups

New Jersey became internationally famous two decades ago when The Sopranos premiered on HBO in 1999. In 2022, it is pioneering affordable, autonomous shared transportation for under-served communities. Tony Soprano would have approved.

MORE LOCAL HEADLINES. Tony would have approved! ( Disclosure: I live in New Jersey and I love it! ) the “Trenton MOVES” project. MOVES stands for “Mobility & Opportunity: Vehicles Equity System” - and is designed to eliminate transportation inefficiencies that exist in various under-served communities in the state. What : New Jersey Gov. Public transportation exists in New Jersey - however, using it to commute certain routes is highly inefficient and expensive. For example, in locations like Trenton where car ownership per household is minimal (zero or one), commuting to well-paying jobs (for example to an Amazon warehouse 15 miles away in Robbinsville which pays $21/hour) would take 2-3 transfers via public transport and consume an average of 90 minutes each way. When. What's something you would change about your industry? Something I would change in my industry is the lack of diversity, still to this day.

This hinders employment and upward mobility. Similar inefficiencies exist for seniors, children and others who are not able to drive - and have to sacrifice social, medical care and educational opportunities. MOVES aims to change this through innovative deployment of shared, autonomous and electric mobility, with attractive pricing and efficiency in terms of time and distance travelled. According to the MOVES announcement and RFEI (Request for Expression of Interest), the specific operational goal of the MOVES project is “to explore the feasibility of deploying ~100 AVs to serve as low-capacity (4-8 passenger), high-quality (on-demand, kiosk-to-kiosk) shuttles to serve the 90,000 residents who live in the City of Trenton’s 8 square miles. The effort will be phased in over two (2) years and will serve the population of New Jersey’s capital city, a population where 70% of households have one or fewer cars”. What are you most passionate about? Music: listening, appreciating, and creating.

The NJ DOT is soliciting leading AV companies to provide general information on the feasibility of this concept. The structure is one of a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP), with AV companies providing the technical and implementation expertise and the Governor’s Office, NJ DOT and the City of Trenton providing administrative leadership. One or more institutions of higher education will also be involved in the project. The initial deployment in Trenton within a prescribed ODD (Operational Design Domain) is expected to provide the learning and KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) to extend the project to other parts of NJ. The goal is to “achieve a near-zero crash rate, low disengagement rate during the demonstration period, and ensure that safety readiness is achieved at simulation, vehicular, sensor, driving behavior, fleet operations, and user experience levels”. What artistic work do you wish you created? I wish I created a music video for each song on my EP “Love & Release,” and had written a Young Adult novel.

Professor Alain Kornhauser of Princeton University has been a leading advocate for applying the benefits of autonomous and sustainable transportation to under-served communities for the past 6 years. He celebrated his Golden Jubilee as a Princeton University professor this year and has focused extensively on technology and policy development for automated and intelligent transport systems. He authored the first report on the Trenton Transit Study way back in 1975, and has testified on issues of transportation equity for under-served communities on multiple occasions, the last being in December 2021  just before the MOVES announcement. Apart from these efforts, he is also the faculty chair for PAVE (Princeton Automated Vehicle Engineering) and Director of CARTS (Corporation for Automated Road Transportation Safety). His persistence has finally paid off with the MOVES announcement which creates a welcoming environment for AV companies to invest in autonomy and transportation in the Garden State. I’m just getting started so I have no complaints, but if I could change one thing it would be the emphasis on self-promotion, and the pressure that comes with it—that’s my least favorite part.
