“We’re surprised, if you would’ve asked me last month, I wouldn’t have said we’d hit $1 billion three months in a row,” says Michael Lawton, a senior research analyst for the Nevada Gaming Control Board. “There’s strong demand, consumers are healthy, and visitation to the Strip is rebounding.”Revenue from every casino district in Nevada increased in May compared with May 2019. Statewide gaming revenue is up 8% for the fiscal year.
The numbers are surprising, considering how dependent the Strip is on tourists and business conventions, both of which have yet to fully rebound. The latest report from April found that the number of people who visited Vegas that month was down 27% compared with April 2019. Hotel occupancy was down 24% and the number of airline passengers visiting was down 32% during the same time.
“The local and regional casinos, places you can drive to rather than fly to, are helping the state keep its head above water,” says Lawton, “But the Strip is starting to deliver increases. It went from a single digit decrease in March compared with March 2019, to a small increase in April to now a double digit increase in May. That bodes well for the Strip.”
