Netflix Inc. is removing a controversial scene from an episode of the first season of its popular teen drama “13 Reasons Why,” people familiar with the matter said, following a sustained controversy over whether the show increased the risk of teen suicide.
Based on the book of the same name, “13 Reasons Why” is about a depressed high-school girl who takes her own life and sends a classmate a tape explaining why she did it and who she blames.
Suicide was never mentioned in book. Never should be in show.
We might as well put a colorless blob on a blank screen for entertainment so people don’t get offended
Great!! Now take down the fucking scene of the dude getting raped with a broom
but not the r*pe scenes.... cool....
This scene represents what suicide is it’s graphic and I suffer with depression and mental health but it made me sit up and go I would never want my loved ones to find me like this or any other way so it does make suicide awareness and whatever suicide is always graphic
Has no one seen faces of death?
Oh but tyler gets harassed with a- im done wit yall🤦🏾♀️
Most of you people know that's gonna happen in the show. How about getting triggered you just don't watch it, because despite criticism people actually like watching it for entertainment purposes. At least add an option or something.
Can we also remove the scene of Tyler being sodomized by a broom?
I am in no way depressed or in a bad mental state (thank god), but even I was shocked by the brutality of her suicide scene, especially when I read the book before watching the series and she just overdoses on pills instead. I assumed it was going to be an offscreen death....
So extra!!! It’s a show about suicide awareness and sometimes you do have to have to take risk. Especially, if it can open the floor for a much needed conversation.
literally do not even remember the suicide scene. Know what I do remember? The last episode of season 2 with tyler in the Bathroom. That shit stays with you. So I mean....just saying. Death, maybe is not the worst thing?
In of course, we have shows where rape, murders, crimes, bullying etc. are in full display . So hypocritical !
Okay ... but the rape scenes aren’t triggering and traumatic?
😔
Teens were suicidal long before this
Then don’t watch it 🙄
For why? We done seen the shit
Yet Tyler's is staying?
The only thing I have to say about this: if you guys read the book, you know what happens and they literally put a warning out. If you don’t like it or find it triggering, please don’t watch. There are people who like the show, myself included, and want to watch.
Everyone can do something about suicide. Share awareness. Go volunteer. Help breaking the stigma about it by talking about it. Its ok to talk about mental health, depression and other mental health conditions. Is ok to mention the word 'suicide' Get training get involved. Uptou
Oh, let's just stop making movies abt everything from teen pregnancy to true crime to Godzilla. If someone watches a slasher film does that mean they might become a slasher? If a kid watches Harry Potter does that mean they'll try to drive a shopping cart into a subway column?
Writers of the show should kill themselves
If you watch a graphic suicide scene and it makes you suicidal, you’re the one who has the problem...
It did
Seriously, it didn’t ‘increase’ teen suicide. Some people got the wrong picture of the entire show.
megatr_n nooblinka TMB3ast
WTF is wrong with today's teens How Influential could a fictional character be? How stupid could we humans being be
Not required...
Yeah because that scene looked super fun for people to emulate.
40 years ago de democrats blamed Ozzy Osbourne and Judas Priest’s music, and even took them to trial for the same reason. The World going backwards.
so instead erase it and pretend it didn’t happen - not a good move if you ask me
Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the whole show about this particular teens suicide, so why remove the scene? I get it’s a “sensitive” subject but it’s the reality of it
People are getting offended why don’t you accept the fact that this shit happens on a day to day basis that this method is real and a show is shedding light to it but you don’t wanna see gruesome “unrealistic” suicide this shit is real don’t deny it
I seriously don't know whether the numbers have increased or decreased....but our curiosity has totally increased.....of watching the show...🎭🎭🎭
Too early to do so.
Welcome to 1984.
Never watched it but surely the scene has to stay in to provide context, or am I missing something?
Lmao yea ima go kill myself cause some girl did on a show lmao how gay is that 😂
OMG people are so sensitive
If anything, showing the gruesome reality would hopefully put teens off committing suicide.
Of course it did!! Therapists were literally warning not to watch it. These people have no idea what it is like to suffer with suicidal ideation or have children/teens suffer from it. Your world changes as a parent to always be on edge. Plus, it was a distorted perspective.
The whole show is encouraging teen suicide. I'd say remove all the scenes.
Can we please remove all murder scenes in movies and TV shows as it may increase the risk of murder.
2 years later and the research has proven it started a contagion- as advised by all health professionals consulted prior to original release. Bravo.
Bullshit I Wanna See Those Slit Writs Don’t Take The Scene Out Now 13ReasonsWhy netflix
Jesus Christ
Lame
about time, crazy to claim to be a show bringing awareness to young people but show such graphic imagery of suicide
The entire show was about a girl who killed herself.... but they aren’t removing the unnecessarily brutal rape scene which was ALSO imitated by horrible kids which WASNT EVEN IN THE BOOK?! THATS SO FUCKED UP WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!
Just remove the whole thing. Then you wont have to keep removing scenes here and there..
Of course it has
I just want to say I was watching this show in my apartment 2 years ago? And that scene TRIGGERED ME to the point where I had to check myself into the hospital. I had to tell myself not to harm myself. This should’ve never been released
Boooooo
That's a pity
many people saw the 1st season a long time ago.. so long ago, in fact i don't even remember what the scene was
Wise.
I'm torn on this one.
The show is about a girl who commits suicide after she sent out tape recordings to everyone who had done her wrong and sent her down this road. The whole show is controversial for its depiction of mental health, sexual assault and trauma. And teens repeat what they see on screen.
I don't think so because no one really knows what mental problem the student is going through in his life. And I know suicide I not the solution of any problem but 13ReasonsWhy just a TV SHOW who put light on the students life who were bullied.
The scene didn’t bother me. But they should have consulted with mental health professionals with regard to that scene before publishing the original cut of the season rather than feeling the need to go back and tamper with it.
Seems a little late doesn't it. I watched the season and it was one of the most painful moments I've seen on television I can only imagine what someone feels when they're already suicidal
And they start rolling out the 'Why was this removed' line.
