. Dropping in just one binge-able slot, the series stars everyone’s least favourite fictional boyfriend Adrian Grenier . His character Nick is a seemingly normal family man who is abducted and paraded on the internet, where he is branded an abuser of women and set to be murdered by unknown assailants once his story reaches five million viewers.
I know right, already, gripped! Want to hear more? Of course you do! Described as “a crime with a sinister online twist”, the series plunges into the depths of the internet. “explores the ways dangerous and uncontrolled impulses are fuelled in the age of social media,” the show notes read, “and reveals the ever-widening fractures between virtual and real-life personas.”
The eight episode series, set in the USA but filmed in Australia, also stars Zoe Kazan as Nick’s sister Pip, who is struggling to uncover the truth out about her brother as his abduction goes viral and becomes a media storm. The trailer, released last night, gives viewers a sneak peek at that theme of disparity between the IRL and URL. In it, we are introduced to the protagonist as a loving son, brother, husband and friend, before being asked to question whether it’s all a facade. We see Nick, his face bloodied, holding up a sign saying “I abuse women” presumably at the behest of his kidnappers. “At five million views I die,” the next sign reads.
All eight episodes — each told from the perspective of a different member of Nick’s family — drop on the streaming platform on 25 August. Over the course of each instalment, the audience learns that there’s more to this seemingly pleasant white family man than there seems and eventually, the truth about why he’s being targeted.
