Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos' “non-apology apology” over Dave Chappelle's show misses the mark as Sarandos struggles to navigate culture wars

This reminds me of the classic non-apology apology: not “I’m so sorry for what I’ve done,” but “I’m sorry you feel that way.” Unsatisfying. It was a pyrrhic apology — in name only, toothless, and insufficient.

And clearly it was insufficient to turn the tide of criticism, or the walk-out itself. Here is what he could have done better — 6 lessons to be learned by leaders, and us all:Before you take what could be a controversial stance, anticipate what could happen. And as good risk management would dictate, be risk-aware as you plan your next steps. The minute trouble occurs face it head on, in real time.

5. Take your principled stance — no need to necessarily change — but be thoughtful and speak at length about why you have chosen it.6. Acknowledge — truthfully — that you have a lot to learn. Why don’t we try to cancel “cancel culture?” We do need to let our leaders learn. We do need to help leaders hear us, grow and change. And we, too, must listen, grow and change. The more we square off against one another — even if it might be funny — the less we demonstrate true empathy and the worse the pain from the culture wars will get. And that’s a message for Dave Chapelle as well us all.

So, this is way harder to do than say, as Ted Sarandos has clearly found out. But why not learn to lead with corporate, artistic, and populist compassion first, before we need to draw blood. The divisions among us, especially as we embrace DEI values, may become even starker. Why not learn the lessons that will honor the difference, rather than ignore or mock it?

Cancelling is exactly the point Dave was making, and they did exactly what he said they were going to do.

1/That’s right, there’s absolutely no need to apologize. Netflix streams would be pretty empty if they adjust the program according to every individuals taste. Do you think the war refugee is happy to see American war hero shows? Do you think that a mother who lost her …

Nah you good Ted. Carry on.

This is proving Chappelles point. Blacks still can’t get the police to stop murdering them and they are worried about 1 mans opinion.
