An 'unseasonably strong low pressure system' will continue to loom over the Bay Area.

Service meteorologist Drew Peterson said. Some areas east of Half Moon Bay and the Oakland Hills picked up over a tenth of an inch. It’s the result of what Peterson described as an “unseasonably strong low pressure system,” especially for July.

“It’s not something we see every summer,” he said, explaining that an interaction between the system and a reservoir of moisture in the marine layer was the cause of Saturday’s rainfall. “This looks like the kind of heavy drizzle we’d see in late April.” The weather system will continue to loom over the Bay Area for the next couple of days, and the region could see periods of light drizzle on Monday afternoon, followed by the arrival of a cold front that may hinder fireworks displays.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if the sun does break through briefly this afternoon, but it’s looking quite cloudy otherwise,” Peterson said. “Unfortunately the timing of that [cold front] alongside the return of the overnight marine layer may make it difficult to view fireworks tomorrow. It’s amplifying the fog.”

Though visibility is dependent on a variety of factors, from the elevation of the fireworks to the timing of the shows, Peterson expects that areas farther inland may have the best chance at viewing the annual tradition. Even if you’re closer to the coast, however, he said it’s worthwhile to take a look.
