Michael Weatherly, who played Tony DiNozzo on NCIS, teases the return of his character alongside one other fan-favorite. The long-running CBS procedural returns on January 9 for a big crossover event that will unite NCIS with two spinoffs, NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: Hawai’i, for a three-hour saga, which will kick off with the NCIS episode titled "Too Many Cooks.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Now, responding to a fan on Twitter, Weatherly strongly hints he'll be returning to NCIS and that he won't be alone. Weatherly, who last appeared as DiNozzo in the NCIS season 13 finale back in 2016, was interacting with a viewer who expressed their hope to see DiNozzo and Ziva David reunited. The actor replies in a way that suggests the characters could be returning.
As for why the actors left NCIS, de Pablo initially explained that she departed out of respect for her character, saying in a 2016 interview: "Unfortunately because of political things and scripts not being good enough, I chose not to [return to NCIS]." She'd later clarify those remarks in 2019, after returning to the show as a guest, noting that they were taken out of context.
Weatherly has recently said he'd be interested in playing DiNozzo again, a sentiment which was echoed by NCIS showrunner Steven D. Binder. While there's nothing in the way of an official confirmation, these hints are an encouraging sign for fans who are hoping to have some closure in terms of what happened to Ziva and DiNozzo, especially coming several years since Weatherly and de Pablo ended their runs as series regulars.
