NEW YORK (AP) — An estimated 17 million people in the United States watched the opening ceremony for the Tokyo Olympics held in a largely empty stadium, down 36% from the kickoff to the Rio de Janeiro Games five years ago.

NBC was unable to break down how many people watched live and how many saw the prime-time version. The 26.7 million who saw the Rio opening ceremony included both television and online viewership.Nine years ago, when the Summer Olympics were held in London, the opening ceremony drew a record-setting U.S. audience of 40.7 million people.

It’s difficult to tell how much the sluggish start to the Tokyo Games reflects decreased interest in the Olympics, which were delayed a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, or profound changes in how Americans watch television. With the explosion of streaming as an alternative, ratings for live television have dropped sharply over the past five years.

Aston Martin and The Little Car Company have built a very cool and very expensive little James Bond DB5 with toy machine gun headlights.

I'm thinking that 'estimated' number is far lower. We’re tired and don’t have cable. It’s in the middle of the night sleep 💤 sorry couldn’t watch it That's a new record , right? No one I know is watching the games. No one I know cares about them. Maybe it's time the Olympics went away. Just over 5% of our population. Wow.

empty stadiums are “full of dads”, says one optimistic olympian China is leading in gold and medals. Americans don't like to lose. if nbc had not made it difficult and expensive maybe more people would watch. turned off by nbc greed so turned off most olympics. I cannot remember the last time I watched the opening ceremony. Maybe part of the London games?

Watched.

Tokyo Olympics: NBC “Won’t Ignore the Circumstances” of PandemicThe last time NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt was in Tokyo, he had to leave his shoes behind. It was 2011, and Holt was in the country covering the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear power plan… They did. They’re airing the Olympics.

I watched it, but it was the most uninspiring one I've ever seen and not very creative. I really expected better from Japan. Rio was also in time zone most of the US could manage to stay awake for…Tokyo is on the opposite side of the globe—and no matter how much I love the Olympics, staying up for a 1-2am start of broadcast is just not happening.

Unless you have cable, it's astonishingly difficult to actually watch the Olympics. You'd think Peacock would have quite a bit but it is mostly highlights and soccer/softball replays. Detach Olympics from NBC and make it its own streaming service. I'd subscribe for each Olympics. Summer games = I stopped watching because we dropped cable 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t know anyone who watched it . People aren’t watching because the world is in a pandemic. It is not time for this narcissistic event. Plus they are allowing unvaccinated human garbage to compete and attend, spreading the pandemic father Horse shit. I turned off Olympics when some babe started singing John Lennon's 'Imagine' during opening ceremony.

Paid athletes, musicians, actors can’t say what they believe in yet it’s okay for everyone else? I’d much rather watch the Olympics than the other garbage on TV.

Tokyo Olympics Viewership Way Down From 2016, But Streaming Up For NBCThe primetime ratings for the opening ceremony at the Tokyo Olympics aren’t modeling the Games’ time-honored motto. They’re not being delivered faster, and they certainly aren&82… I watched from my antennae and TV app. Not cable. I watched on good old television with an antenna. It made me weep like it always does. I'm a die-hard Believer in the Olympics and what they are meant to stand for NBCOlympics showed commercials every 3 minutes. They didn't even show a bunch of countries coming in! They really butchered the whole thing, really.

I decided to not care after they banned Sha’Carrie Richardson and would let women wear shorts…what fucking year is this? NBCOlympics nbc what I need to understand from your company is why miketirico a man who has more than 1 sexualAssault case against him, 1 of which lead to his suspension, is STILL employed by your company I think women & girls wouldn’t appreciate you employing a predator

It was on during a weekday morning. Tokyo is 13-16 hours ahead of mainland US; Rio is only 1-4. Nobody supports the far left. Easy stuff As an Olympic lover from way back, I honestly don't care about this year's Olympics. There's much bigger & more urgent things to deal with. It just feels forced and hollow this year. And to even have the Olympics when Covid is out of control in Japan irritates the Hell out of me.

good enough viewers for a pandemic.we need all the outlet, the hope for everyone in this new normal.🥴👍 This is because if you sontbhave cable, you have no way of watching!! I have zero interest in these Olympics. Pretty stupid comparison given that Rio is +1hr and Tokyo +13hrs from East coast time. Not many will watch an opening ceremony at 6am on a weekday

Yeeeeup didn’t watch it.

Olympic Ratings Fall Sharply: NBC Says 17 Million Watched Opening Ceremony In U.S.The opening ceremony for the Tokyo Olympics drew nearly 10 million fewer viewers than the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.

Think again...

Olympic Ratings Fall Sharply: NBC Says 17 Million Watched Opening Ceremony In U.S.The opening ceremony for the Tokyo Olympics drew nearly 10 million fewer viewers than the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro. wow Hard to do an opening ceremony via Zoom and have people care about it... Maybe try airing the ceremony live instead of tape delay like it’s still the 1970s.

Simone Biles' Tokyo Olympics off to shaky start but golds still in reachBiles' passage to two finals looked—at times—in serious jeopardy, as she continues her bid to become the most decorated female Olympic gymnast of all time. Let's give her some slack & emotional support... it can't be easy. What is up with this effin photo? Y’all just can’t help yourselves from being the worst. Sweltering Conditions Are a Tough Opponent at the Tokyo OlympicsThe Olympics have just gotten under way, but already sweltering conditions in the host city are adversely affecting some athletes Gettr is a marketplace of ideas, where you can speak your mind without ever worrying about being politically censored. Lets ignore that half the world is burning, half the world is flooding, and half the world is sick with a pandemic. Things are not great in the world and people think the Olympic games are super important for some reason.
