The Japanese-style relay—held in Utica, Michigan, which is the home course of the Hanson-Brooks Original Distance Project—pitted six pro teams against each other in a co-ed competition. The relay consisted of six legs: 10K men, 6.1K women, 5K men, 10K women, 6.1K men, and 5K women. The total distance is the equivalent of a marathon.
Zach Planning of Hansons came in seconds later in 28:58 and Roots Running’s Frank Lara was third with 29:26.The women running the second leg maintained their places through their section. Paquette opened up NAZ Elite’s lead to 24 seconds on Hanson’s Anne-Marie Blaney. “We had a really fun year making lemonade out of lemons. We did what we could with what we were given and tried to capitalize on those opportunities. Much like a lot of the teams here, I think a lot of people are coming off breaks from that season, so this was a, ‘I don’t know, let’s see what happens and do something solid.’”Hansons kept its second place spot to the finish with a time of 2:21:08.
“We needed this more than ever before,” Shadrack Biwott, Hanson’s 5K runner, said after his first race since the Olympic Marathon Trials. “I hope this continues, to be honest. I hope more sponsors and people get involved and try to put more to the public about this race. This is huge. We’re on to something with this relay. Honestly, I think we should continue this when things return. It was just fun.
