Illinois is set to be the first state to require Asian American history be taught in public schools amid growing national concerns about anti-Asian hate and discrimination

. But as Illinois, which has an Asian population of about 6 percent, is slated to establish an education precedent nationally, at least 10 other states and several school districts are also weighing similar moves.

California, Colorado, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., have all recently weighed some form of ethnic studies, Kwoh said. And groups in Georgia, New Jersey and Washington state are also exploring it.“I’m getting calls from all over the country — people who have read about TEAACH and how they can pass this bill in their state,” she said.

“We’ve got to stop fighting over the one slice of pie that is labeled the diversity slice. There’s enough pie for everyone," she said in an interview. "When we are divided and not able to be each others’ allies, it’s really hard to move forward any kind of reform for injustices that are based on race.”

“We know through Holocaust education that students who are educated and understand histories of others are more empathetic, are more inclusive, and ultimately more sympathetic and willing to engage with people who are different than them,” said David Goldenberg, the regional director of the Midwest Anti-defamation League, which reports increasing numbers of Asian Americans becoming victims of online harassment because of their race or ethnicity.

Nice move lady. Some people in America look at Asians as timid lambs and think they can say and do what they want as if we are not decent humans with feelings. This has been going on since I was growing-up in the USA!

Black assaults on Asians continue... BLM & Media remain silent

neal_katyal Congrats Jen!

Yay, and it should taught along with Black and other ethnic studies as well!

Nice. Here's a thought, just teach American History, all of it.

FakeNews

Am sure LeaderMcConnell will veto this down because of.... erm,,, uh... perhaps not ?

I remember the wrongs of the Chinese exclusion act being taught while I was in school, but I wish I been taught more Asian American history

Gov. Pritzger is and has been a true leader of ALL the people of Illinois.

Ok I will take the bait...what will this add? Other than internment camps in for Japanese for a few years in WW2 and building the railroad...what deserves shoehorning into our already crowded curriculum?

How about Black History too?

We can have intamicy without causing a pregnancy . Abortion is a sad operation .

Yes I believe history should include all races but is this helping or further dividing when a particular category has its own specialty?

Does Illinois require BlackHistory to be taught? ...in light of 400+ years of anti-Black hate and discrimination, not to mention institutional and systemic racism?

YES! THANK YOU! My Philippines passport photo when I was 5 which allowed me to emigrate to America thanks you too!!! 🇵🇭— 🇺🇸

Asian American history will be taught in Illinois public schls. But critical race theory pertaining to Black History from 1619 is panned America's oldest minority group, can't have it's story be told for fear of White folks fragile egos. There's something wrong w/ this picture!

Is this 'defund the police' in action? As in, the people committing hate crimes probably aren't getting much out of school. And, ya know, ya could police the areas where hate crimes occur, and not just arrest white guys. I know it's tough to do that, and feel morally smug.

In WWII Japanese-Americans were sent to internment camps. Within 20 years, they were more successful than whites. The richest ethnic groups in America are all Asians. Asians have an imprisonment rate 3 times lower than white. Discrimination is just a PC myth.

Bunch of racist white people here too

Just f'ing teach HISTORY~ the good, the bad, & the ugly... the ugly being genocide of indigenous peoples & slavery; the bad being discrimination against pretty much each European ethnic group as they immigrated. READ ZINN!

No, very bad policy. Either mandate a mix of cultural diversity or leave that to parents and PSAs. Doing this with one race/nationality sets up a bad precedent and leads to more resentment and targeting.

Sifill_LDF Wow. At the same time that ADOS history is being banned from schools!!! Why aren’t AAPI saying anything about that?

Good intentions but how is teaching history going to stop thugs of color who probably dropped out anyway from attacking Asians.

neal_katyal When Asian history is taught students who have been subjected to Eurocentric history will be amazed to learn that Chinese of the 14th and 15th century considered Europeans to be primitives who wore animal skins, that the Chinese discovered America in the early 15th century, etc.

neal_katyal Marvelous!

Stop it already…. When does this stop? Every ethnic group that has come to this country has been discriminated against. Will schools have to teach Irish, Italian, Polish, Jewish, Mexican History as well?

And black history remains burried. Whoiieee

Will they teach how communist China has more systemic racism engrained in their Marxist culture, especially against blacks, more than any other culture on the planet? Sometimes the truth is ugly, but blissful ignorance is always worse.

Are they teaching it first in Urban Blue Cities? THAT is where the apparent problem is.

Asian American? Means people with Iranian, Armenian, Mongolian, Nepali, Yemeni, Russian, Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Afghan, Turkmeni, Georgian, Turkish, Qatari, Burmese, Japanese, Laosian, history? Damn thats a wide topic.

neal_katyal The safest part of this is that it's taken us this frikkin long to understand that more than white people live in our country. We're all Americans. Not just white people.

Learn reading skills and there are many books on many wonderful cultures. Diversity is great, but let's emphasize the basics. Something like 2 out of 3 americans don't even know the three branches of government.

neal_katyal Only about 1,500 years after I left school. Thanks

Don’t forget Hispanic history and Trans history especially where it intersects Black history

neal_katyal Or just call it history 🤷‍♀️

That will make it worse. The reason of hatred against Asians is envy related Asians are the most successful ethnic group, they excel in small businesses, school, college and University. Conversely African Americans excel in crime, drugs, vagrancy and ignorance. A cultural problem

They should teach a class on how ALL minorities are hated and treated horribly blacks asians native americand Jews. They all have had rising hate against them asians 1 jews close 2nd. Even in cali they are trying to ban them from schools thats what so called progressives do.

neal_katyal Awesome!!!

so, erasing ww2, Korean War and Vietnam war is that gonna be the agenda?

Perfect that will definitely make a difference cause most people who randomly attack other people based solely on their race are high achieving high school students

Asian American Power Is Necessary to Make AAPI Women Fully VisibleNon-Asians pay attention when anti-Asian sentiment in the U.S. turns violent. But alongside these violent punctuations is something ever-present, a sense of otherness that is subterranean and pervasive. And with this seems to come a doubting of Asian America that makes me angry: the fundamental questioning of whether Asian America exists. As AAPI Heritage Month Ends, We Must Recommit Ourselves to the Fight Against Racism and Anti-Asian HateAsian women have been overlooked, dehumanized and ignored by American society. When we are seen, we are often stereotyped as the “China Doll” or the “Dragon Lady.” We have been reduced to our perceived race and stripped of our individual humanity and identity. If this can happen to two Asian leaders in the White House, then what is happening elsewhere across our country to Asian women with fewer resources?
