NASA is blaming unusually soft rock for last week's sampling failure on Mars. The Perseverance rover came up empty after trying to collect its first core sample on the red planet.

This pair of August 2021 images made available by NASA shows the drill hole from Perseverance’s first sample-collection attempt on Mars. NASA is blaming unusually soft rock for last week’s sampling fiasco on Mars. The Perseverance rover came up empty after attempting to collect its first core sample on the red planet for eventual return to Earth. Data beamed back on Friday, Aug.

Imaging by the rover and its companion helicopter, Ingenuity, show the sedimentary rock should be much better for sampling there, Louise Jandura, chief engineer for Perseverance’s sampling campaign, said Wednesday.“The hardware performed as commanded but the rock did not cooperate this time,” Jandura wrote in an online update.

NASA is looking to collect about 35 samples that would be returned via future spacecraft in a decade.

Do NASA scientists have to publicly share every science experiment, successes, failures, decisions, etc. on a daily basis? If I had to share every minute of my day with judgmental strangers, I might be tempted to occasionally kick someone. Perseverance Mars JPL

Good example of why the news media can't be trusted with science reporting. How is this a 'fiasco'? Fucking clickbait garbage.

Is it really a 'fiasco', though, crappy ... seriously? These mofos got a robot on a planet 6 months away, while 70 percent of America cant even understand 6th grade Science. At this point, their faces belong on currency.

'Fiasco'? Chill people, it's just how science is some times. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Bread? America? *Gasp* Captain & Tenille?

Well, that’s a useless planet. It has *bad* rocks. Guess we’ll need to go elsewhere for our science then. Somewhere with rocks that live up to our expectations.

Mars: I swear, this never happens!

There is no such thing as a bad rock.

How can it be soft rock? There's no air supply.

Nasa fail. Americans are so last century.

I bought some bad, powdery rock before. It happens. 🤷🏽‍♂️

👽🤣👽🤣👽🤣

Im no scientist but wouldn’t softer be easier 🤔

Soft rock? What, was Jackson Browne up there or something?

I fucking hate the Eagles, man
