An official said this is the worst attack inside Berlin’s museums.

More than 70 artworks and artifacts at Berlin museums were smeared with an oily liquid by an unknown individual or individuals on October 3, authoritiesOne of the damaged pieces at Berlin's Museum Island.Christina Haak, the deputy director of Berlin’s state museums, said 63 exhibits at the Pergamon Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Neues Museum were affected, and there is not a clear theme or pattern for why certain pieces were chosen.

Carsten Pfohl, a senior official with Berlin’s criminal police office, said it isn’t clear how the liquid was applied, it seems the pieces were randomly chosen and investigators suspect one individual is responsible. Pfohl reiterated the motive is not clear and would not address speculation about a link to conspiracy theories.

Friederike Seyfried, a director of Berlin’s Egyptian collection, said the substance is oily but not corrosive though she wouldn’t give more details, citing the ongoing investigation. Police urged witnesses to disclose any suspicious activity on October 3 and said they did not make an announcement because of “tactical considerations” regarding the investigation. there were other acts of vandalism outside the museums this summer, but this marks the worst attack inside Berlin’s museums. Pergamon Museum has been a target for conspiracy theorists in recent months, according to German media outlets.
