Garrett doesn’t usually weigh in a lot during the offseason, but when he does, it’s significant. For a player who’s given his thumbs down to free agent defensive linemen over the years and is territorial about the position, he’s all in on Clowney.

Clowney, 29, was also good for Garrett on the field, taking some heat off of him and enabling him to take down the quarterback 16 times while Clowney did so nine times.

The Browns will likely revisit it after the draft, and if it makes sense financially, they’ll get it done. They’ve also thoroughly scouted the top defensive ends in the draft, and could select one in the second or third round. The Browns took a lot of heat for lowering Watson’s first-year base salary to $1.035 million given that he’d only be fined $57,500 for each lost game check this season in the event of an NFL suspension instead of the hundreds of thousands he’d owe with a much bigger base.

They backed that up by giving Denzel Ward the same $1.035 million base salary for 2022 when they extended his contract on Monday. They signed him to a five-year extension through 2027 worth $100.5 million, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL at an annual value of $20.1 million a year. He received $44.5 fully guaranteed at signing and $71.25 fully guaranteed for injury.
