Christi Brown believes that a popular children's floatation aid, which he was not wearing when he drowned, contributed to his death.

"I knew I still needed to watch him around the water but I felt like the puddle jumper was that one extra layer of protection," Brown told"GMA."

In her Facebook post, Brown wrote,"Puddle Jumpers teach children to bicycle their arms and legs in order to propel through the water. This expends huge amounts of energy and contributes significantly to drowning incidents because it cannot be sustained for very long."on the topic of puddle jumpers, "Toddlers do not have the cognitive capabilities to understand that they need the device to float in the pool. Thus, the problem occurs when the child is not wearing the puddle jumper.

Oostman also stressed the importance of swim lessons from early in life."And not just one session," he said,"The lessons should be ongoing and as skills develop some of the redundant protective measures [like PFDs] can begin to be removed."

Yea get them out of puddle jumpers asap. I have 2 daughters 4 and 6 and taught them asap to swim. Best defense is knowing how to swim

Classic case of someone pointing the finger of blame, and not accepting responsibility for their own actions. Something that is becoming more and more common these days.

Children drown because the caregiver isnt paying sufficient attention. Attending a party is particularly dangerous as parents are distracted. Being at Grandma’s is also risky because grandparents arent used to providing the hyper-vigilance required to keep young children safe.

I didnt know my baby was in the hot car.Hmm sound familiar accidents happen just own it its a sad situation all around.

My grandkids used these...but, I never let them swim alone. I know, kids sneak into pools and drown, sadly. We've been pool owners for the last 20 years give or take, and no child has ever snuvk in the pool. No one is allowed near the pool unless an adult is outside. They always

Then why did you buy it and why didn’t you take him to the YMCA to teach him to swim. Parents should be more mindful of children around water when they cannot swim. My children were taught to swim by age 2!

Warning. I didnt read the article but i will tell u this - puddle jumpers or not, life jacket or not its your responsibility as a parent to watch your children!! Dont think ohh they got floaties on they will be fine. 🤦‍♂️

So, it's not because the mom didn't properly look after her kid or teach him how to behave in and around water, it's because of a flotation device the kid was NOT using at the time? Sad story but that's some serious deflection right there.

abc this accident happened on 9-24-2016

Maybe he died because he wasn't wearing his puddle jumper 🤦‍♀️

very sad

Am new here seeking for a serious relationship

So cute

So sorry for the loss this family suffered. However, as a mother of 4 and a pool owner. I loved puddle jumpers for my kids. Watch your kids near a pool you can’t fault a life saving device your child wasn’t wearing for your lack of actually watching your child.

You should have paid someone to supervise him...

Thé puddle jumper isn’t a life guard, and works best when worn. This is just a mother who can’t accept she’s responsible for her child’s death.

When animals go wild

So the kid always used a puddle jumper, but when he died he wasn't using one. And now the mother is criticizing the puddle jumpers?

The lesson here is that children must be watched at all times, especially when they aren't wearing a flotation device. Very tragic.

This is an absolute travesty, but that headline? Folks this poor darling child died from drowning in a big pool, not from jumping in puddles like little kids do everyday. Fix this ABC

I’m so sorry for their loss but the child drowned because he was not wearing a floatation device and could not swim. He did not die because of a puddle jumper, that’s an excuse!

Sorry for the loss.

Denial

Oh brother! Poor baby rest in heaven! Mom not so much!

What contributed to his death was lack of supervision and lack of parenting/teaching. It doesn’t say in the article but did she talk with her kids that they need to have their devices on at all times when they are near or in the water? She also shouldn’t have taken it off him.

Maybe watch when your youngest of SEVEN kids is in the pool Chrisi with an I. Sorry for the loss but the blame is square in the mirror.

I KILLED MY TODDLER DUE TO MY IRRESPONSIBLE ACTIONS AS A PARENT. Fixed it

A child lost his life senselessly, I believe contributed to his death was taking off the device while still in the pool area. I have multiple children and I can easily become distracted from one child to another. But when we are around the pool the life vest NEVER comes off

How about a certified life jacket?

Sorry, what drowned that little boy was not teaching him how to swim!

I think a good alternative (beyond the obvious that you need to be WAY more attentive when your child is by the pool) is to develop a habit that your child must always ask for permission before entering the pool. Children are creatures of habit & thru repetition it could stick.

Sorry for the loss ... but floatation device is not a guarantee. The parents should always have eyes ON kids When it comes to water, lakes, pools, etc..,

“BELIEVES” is the key word... she didn’t even SEE him so how can she claim she “believes” this contributed to his drowning? YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE WATCHING HIM.

Christi Brown's grief has clouded her logic. Understandingly so. I feel bad for her and her family and the little guy but she is incorrect in where she is placing blame.

Poor parenting contributed more to his death

lazy parenting

...what? She’s blaming something he wasn’t wearing for him drowning?

This makes me so sad. Toddlers are fast. Toddlers are quiet. Accidents do happen. Anyone blaming the parents can piss off. There are no perfect people and certainly no perfect parent. We do our best to teach and protect our kids yet 'the perfect parent' always has to chime in.

A very tragic accident but this is wrong. So let’s eliminate flotation devices because they give a false sense of security. Any judge should dismiss this case immediately.

She’s wanting to avoid the guilt she’d normally be feeling. Blaming a swim aid that she’d already taken off of him is quite a stretch though. She didn’t see him drown, has no idea how it happened. She just doesn’t want to look at her own guilt yet. Sometimes accidents just happen

Supervision was needed, but I understand what she’s saying

My grandsons have used them for a few years. They are never in the pool without an adult. I agree that it may give them a false sense of security but even with them on I never take my eyes off of them.

Did anyone read the article? The mother is right!

I think WATCHING YOUR CHILD while in a pool is the best drown proofing device on the market. Don't make excuses for your neglect.

As a swim instructor, I understand what this Mom is saying - she’s not wrong. Avoid all devices that give children independence in the pool before they can swim. Instead, get in the water WITH your child and provide swimming safety lessons every single time they enter a pool.

And we wonder why this pandemic is crazy. Why would abc even want to do this story?

This should not have happened if someone was watching the young boy.

How dare you put out a smear article about a parent too lazy to watch her kid properly. This is HER fault!! Why did you give her a platform for her stupid ideas. He is gone because of her!!! This society is in the toilet.

My toddler drowned. Here is my warning about puddle jumpers. Make sure your child is wearing one at all times while in and around a pool. Oh and WATCH YOUR CHILDREN!!!

low hanging fruit

So, no personal responsibility...?

Very very sad. However is she trying to say that her failure to watch her child is the floaties fault?

I’m so very sorry for the loss of her son, but if he wasn’t wearing a puddle jumper, it’s not the fault of the puddle jumper.

Sorry for her loss..but it sounds like she's looking for someone to blame for a tragic accident. I get what she's saying but, He wasn't wearing them!

This is yet another example of the growing trend of people who refuse to take responsibility over their own actions. And instead, just want to blame others.

what? she’s blaming a floating aid? that he wasn’t even wearing? am i reading this right?

He wore a puddle jumper and never drowned. He didn’t wear one and tragically drowned. Yet in the end it’s the puddle jumpers fault. Got it.

How can it be the reason he drowned if he was not wearing it? Explain please.

Bottom line, he wasn't being watched

Christi Brown is an imbecile. While it’s tragic that her son died, placing blame on anything other than poor parenting is, well, poor parenting.

Take another crack at the headline.

Really? It wasn't the lack of supervision with a toddler in a pool?
