, the eventual distanced hangouts, and all the other socially acceptable coping mechanisms, but Rosh Hashanah was the first holiday I observed that I’d had to spend without the familiarof friends and family all around me, yelling, telling jokes, squinting critically at my bangs, and generally filling the room with light.

By the time Tom Hanks and Meg were wrapping their arms around each other joyfully in Riverside Park, I had consumed half a bottle of red wine and half a bag of Zabar’s chocolate rugelach, and I felt the sort of sweet, sleepy satiety I associated with trudging the 10 blocks home as a child after family friends’ Yom Kippur breaking of fast or carting myself home to my dorm after a Passover celebration at my college campus’s Hillel house.

As it turned out, I didn’t need a packed house or a six-course meal to mark the start of the Jewish New Year; all I needed was a sense of communion with myself . Now it’s almost Yom Kippur, the day on which Jews fast to repent and practice forgiveness, then break the fast with a blowout of a meal; I hope to celebrate on Monday at sundown in the park with a few good friends.
