My girlfriend says I should tip in restaurants. I say waitstaff are just like construction and fast-food workers. Who's right?

Today my partner spoke to me for the third time about why she disagrees with my belief and practice of not tipping waitresses.

I’m not expected to tip all other service staff, so why is she bothering me with tipping the waitress every single time we go to a restaurant? Servers are paid anywhere from 2.15 to 5.85 these are not loving wages the tips make the pay livable. If there wasn’t tipping the serving position would be practically be extinct.

Tipping has always been 2 sided... anyone in a service position can be tipped. However.. its based on the service they provide at the time. Give shity service..get a shity tip. Do your job and I'll tip you what i can afford. I've tipped as high as 100% and as low as 0%.

You should wait tables for a week. Even in that short time, you will realize how selfish and greedy you are being. The people who serve you are paid very little. They rely on tips to compensate their income. Not to mention how degrading the job is. You should be ashamed.

I tip to not get shamed, but I don’t care for it personally. I’ve been saying for 25 years it’s a way for the restaurant to pass on the reponsibility of paying the employee to the customer which I think is wrong . Just include it and let’s move on

In the US, we tip for wait service. In other places, people can’t be trusted , so the “gratuity” is added to the bill.

servers have to tip out a % of their bills for the night to the kitchen and bar whether you leave a tip or not. if you dont leave at least 10% tip there's a chance your server is literally paying to bring you your food.
