Calling smartphones a distraction from learning, a California lawmaker wants to follow the lead of France and require school districts to adopt policies that restrict or prohibit students from using them on campus.

New legislation from Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi would require school boards to adopt policies that limit or prohibit the use of cell phones on school grounds.

Many school districts have already banned the use of cell phones, said Muratsuchi, a former Torrance school board member. The school board’s president, Linda Reid, said “concern about cheating and cyberbullying has also come up,” adding that “parents begged us for a policy.”The California School Board Assn. has not yet taken a position on the bill, a spokesman said Wednesday.

But schools actually push students to use technology(ie tablets) in their classes or for homework. They have homework online and can even check their grades online as well..but is this some sort of double standard when they're talking about eliminating smartphones usage in class?

The French got this on right!

Zero tolerance never works. And punishing all for the misdeeds of a few doesn't work well either. Set limits and police infractions. Technology is here to stay. Learn to live with it, you can't ban it.

Cell phones can be a helpful tool to learn and communicate information especially in a crisis situation. While I’m all for a policy that requires phones being off and put away in bags/pockets out of sight during class time, I disagree with a full on ban of cell phones on a campus

Either take them up at the classroom door or ban having them out in class.

Bad plan. Do better. Y'all want to have an easy yes/no to phones as if the phones are the problem. I was under the impression teachers knew how to lead a classroom w/o being dictators.

In class? Sure. Most teachers I know collect them at the door. But at other times, why is the phone an issue?

I think this is not fair.

Good. It is a constant battle in my classroom.

He's got my support

This apply to teachers as well?

EPA bans deadly chemical used in paint strippers — but provides a loophole for commercial operatorsThe Environmental Protection Agency on Friday restricted the use of a toxic chemical used in paint strippers linked to dozens of deaths — but allowed commercial operators to use it as long as they underwent training. of course they do Makes sense This is disingenuous, it's not a loophole. Commercial operators wear the proper safety gear when using dangerous chemicals, unlike most people who don't have access to, or don't purchase them because of cost.
