As the Earth warms and stronger storms keep coming, development in the Southeast is booming. Although the climate hazards are mounting, more Americans are putting themselves in harm's way.

before making landfall. Multiple factors are contributing to this trend, among them: unusually warm sea surface temperatures, which fuel higher wind speeds. On top of that, rising sea levels are compounding the effects of normal storm surge. In the United States the result has been an unprecedented number of storms rated Category 4 or stronger pummeling coastal communities in recent years.

Hurricane Ian ripped through Fort Myers, Fla. and residents are now returning to assess what they have lost. “But due to policy failures in state capitals and in Washington we have made it extremely difficult for people to not only find that information but to even tell people about it.”In response to the growing threat of climate change, some Southeastern cities have begun to take precautions.

In Norfolk, where tidal flooding regularly makes roads impassible, the effects of climate change along the more-than 200-mile shoreline can’t be ignored. Officialsin 2018 to direct development to higher ground in the city. They adopted a scoring system that evaluates proposed projects based on their ability to withstand flooding and other hazards. The city is also planning to protect its downtown by building a system of storm surge barriers, levees, and pump stations.

Well these are their choices ….no one else should pay for it- Via insurance rates or taxes….right ? Isn’t that how this works ? BOOTSTRAPS !

Low cost? Have you been to Florida lately? Maybe Mississippi is low cost. I’m not seeing stories about herds of people moving there.

Zero interest in living there, and the mobile home folks are really tempting fate.

It’s not a low cost of living. That’s so deceptive. They pay tourist prices for everything in Florida.

I would take freedom and hurricanes over authoritarian democrats any day of the week.

Tells you what they think about your climate change hoax.

Don't be surprised if the scales for hurricanes and tornadoes increase...

All the best you will need it

When they are no longer able to get insurance they will stop building there.

I wonder why they were compel to take such a grave risk — I think that should be the question? It's like why people take the risk of shark infested waters and traitorous terrains to come to the US? I think where they were compelled to leave should come into focus.

Build on stilts!

They need to stop or clearly understand they will get clobbered at some point and be able to help themselves

RussianCollusionHoax continues

They make the choice so why should we help them out

Climate crisis is a hoax

No thanks

common sense is down the drain

Because they can't get away from these neoliberal controlled cities fast enough.

Humans, a species that can protect itself but refuses to. Hard to explain that one.

Because climate change is a hoax

Whether its Americans moving to areas where H2O is becoming increasingly less abundant, or to flood plains where floods are prone to occur, or to coastal areas wich could easily erode, or flood, people need to start doing due diligence prior to these moves. Investigate B4 moving.

This correlates very well with so many Americans voting for far right Republicans even it is against their own interests. In both cases ignorance is a main factor.

Increasing population (you having too many kids) both causes climate change, and causes too many people being in hurricane zones.

Get your life changed for the worse by the left or by a storm. At least you can be happy before the storm comes.

And drought zones ... and tornado zones ... 🤷‍♀️ There are only so many choices.

Let them experience climate « change hoax » first hand. Thoughts and prayers 😂

This is a Lie. A Climate Lie.

can’t imagine why?

I think I'd move there just to get away from winter in the north. Plan right and one can deal with hurricanes. But snakes, cockroaches, and alligators make it a no-deal for me

Developers own the Florida legislature

just like obama

Because they are that desperate to get out of NY

More Americans prefer hurricanes to Democrats. Forget the gestapo incompetence of every democrat city and state with COVID response. They hate everything to do with law. They hate America

You should be ashamed of yourselves for politicizing a major disaster and loss of life. I’ve experienced flooding, tornadoes, an earthquake, and effects of a few hurricanes when I lived in MD. This is just a pathetic attack on a Red State and DeSantis! This author is a clown!

Well taxes are low. Or something.

Let them…evolution at work.

We should not pay for their mistakes, especially if they do not have property and casualty insurance.

Very misguided of them when they can’t get any insurance .

🤦‍♂️American intelligence at its finest.

Each climate has its own risks.

Because more Americans aren't into climate voodoo.

Super-Earths are more common and more habitable than Earth. Astronomers are finding more of the billions out there.Astronomers now routinely discover planets orbiting stars outside of the solar system — they're called exoplanets. More common or just easier for us to detect? Even the article says this Another reason super-Earths are ideal targets in the search for life is that they’re much easier to detect and study(opens in new tab) than Earth-sized planets.
