The Biden administration has come under pressure from lawmakers and human rights groups to help Afghans who worked with the U.S. during the war.

The White Househas begun evacuatingAfghans who worked with the U.S. military during the 20-year U.S.-led war through a special visa program that involves strict requirements and vetting.Monday's decision will allow other Afghans – including those who worked for American-based aid and development organizations – to seek refugee status in the U.S. Afghans who worked U.S.-affiliated organizations are particularly at risk for retaliation by the Taliban, a militant Islamic group that has made rapid territorial gains as the U.S. military withdraws.

More:First group of Afghan interpreters who served with US troops are on their way to a new life in the US"The U.S. objective remains a peaceful, secure Afghanistan," the State Department said."However, in light of increased levels of Taliban violence, the U.S. government is working to provide certain Afghans, including those who worked with the United States, the opportunity for refugee resettlement to the United States."

Thousands of Afghans are fleeing their country amid a spike in violence fueled by Taliban attacks; the group has captured significant new territory in recent weeks and seized strategic border crossings with neighboring countries. The result: a 47% increase in the number of civilians killed and wounded in violence across Afghanistan in the first six months of the year, compared to the same period last year, according to United Nations.

The United Nations has also 270,000 Afghans have been displacedinside the country since January,"primarily due to insecurity and violence." President Joe Biden has said American troops will be out of the country by Aug. 31, bringing America's longest war to a close ahead of his initial Sept. 11 deadline. The Pentagon has said the U.S. withdraw is more than 90% complete.

As the U.S. leaves, the security situation in Afghanistan has become increasingly perilous, and the Taliban have made dramatic territorial gains. The Biden administration has come under intense pressure from lawmakers and human rights groups to help those Afghans who worked for the U.S. during the war.

On Friday, more than 200 Afghans who served alongside U.S. troops as translators and in other jobs landed at Fort Lee, Virginia, part of an evacuation program the Biden administration announced earlier this summer. Some 2,500 Afghans – roughly 700 visa applicants and members of their immediate families – are expected to be relocated in the coming weeks.

It's not clear how many Afghans will be included in the new refugee designation, but the State Department said it will expand resettlement opportunities"to many thousands of Afghans and their immediate family members who may be at risk due" to affiliation with U.S. organizations.
