Hurricane Ian destroyed thousands of homes in Florida, sending many families that want to stay in the area seeking temporary accommodations

The destruction forced many families that want to stay in the area to seek temporary accommodations. They are often competing with the construction workers who swarmed the area to help with restoration efforts.Many of those locals—who were priced out of the rental market when the area’s prices soared to record highs—have been forced to move in with family members or live in campers, trailers or mobile homes.

His father sometimes stays in one of the tents, where his bedroom used to be. A neighbor one street over allows them to plug an extension cord into their property to power their mini fridge and microwave. In December, the index indicated that rents in the area were nearly 18% above where they should be. Cape Coral/Fort Myers-area average rents jumped 14.8% to $2,251.39 a month from the year earlier, even as rents in most of the rest of the country have begun to decline.
