The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Montgomery over $36 million to improve areas of the Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail, Rep. Terri Sewell announced Monday. The funding comes from the DOT’s Neighborhood Access and Equity grant program. It will be used to develop a greenway trailhead and add ADA-accessible transportation options along the trail, a news release from Sewell’s office said.
“On the heels of the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, we are thrilled to have secured major federal funding to improve our transportation infrastructure along the Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail,” said Sewell. “This $36 million federal investment will help us tell the story of the struggle for civil rights to more Americans.
