The U.S. Congress faces a showdown on Monday over government spending and debt, while pressure mounts on Democrats to pass a $1 trillion infrastructure bill and resolve internal differences to move forward on President Joe Biden's sweeping social agenda.

The Senate will hold a procedural vote on Monday evening on legislation that has already passed the House of Representatives to fund the U.S. government through Dec. 3 and suspend the nation's borrowing limit until the end of 2022.

Lawmakers also will have to figure out how to raise the debt ceiling to head off the risk of default, with independent analysts warning that the U.S. Treasury Department is likely to exhaust its borrowing authority fully sometime between Oct. 15 and Nov. 4.Democrats are eager to avoid such drama as they try to project competence after four years of Republican Donald Trump's chaotic presidency.

The rift could risk derailing Biden's domestic agenda - and with it, his presidency and the party's hopes of keeping its congressional majorities in next year's midterm elections. The infrastructure bill, which moderates strongly favor, would fund road, bridge, airport, school and other projects. It passed the Senate last month with considerable Republican support.

Biden in a bind on border: 'The coalition that elected him will collapse'President Biden is stuck between immigration advocates in his own party on one side and Republicans, who insist he’s still not doing enough to control the border, on the other. It's not about a president in a bind, but a country of immigrants are in a bind about immigrants at our borders. We make it too much about political party in executive branch, this is an existential American crisis. President Biden is doing a fantastic job cleaning up the trump swamp. Yay Joe! People are expecting Biden to take in massive amounts of refugees from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico, Afganistan and Haiti. Where will we house them? How will we integrate them? The southern border is going to continue being an issue for every president.

Biden in a bind on border: 'The coalition that elected him will collapse'Democratic Rep. Ayanna Pressley, of Massachusetts, called the Border Patrol “egregious and white supremacist.” Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., said it was “worse than what we witnessed in slavery.” Absolutely 💯 Of course, Maxine Waters is batsh*t crazy, but worse than slavery? Using her comparison, then, slavery wasn't all that bad. I'm glad she acknowledged that. If I, as a white dude, had said it, I'd be called a racist.
