Netflix offered Mo’Nique $500,000 to perform a stand-up special. The comedian’s lawsuit alleges that the streaming company pays white women and men more than it pays black women.

includes the statistic that black women earn 61 cents for every dollar a white man earns. “Some may think that this pay inequity is limited to lower paid workers,” the lawsuit says. “But this case shows that it is not. The pay gap for Black women cuts across the economic spectrum affecting low paid workers and highly compensated ones alike.

The lawsuit also notes that in 2018 Netflix reported that only 4% of its workers were black; in 2019 that grew to a mere 6%. “In other words, while its senior management specifically lacks racial diversity, Netflix’s workforce generally also underrepresents Black workers compared to the general population.” The suit includes photos of seven Netflix executives, taken from its website, as a visual demonstration of the company’s lack of diversity, especially in its upper rungs.
