The Senate minority leader 'likes things done properly,' says a friend, and McConnell thought the House vote was 'a sham.'

. McConnell's Tuesday vote in opposition to impeachment made it clear that that won't happen. Here's what wasn't clear: whether and why he'd changed his mind.

For four years as the majority leader, he had worked closely with the White House in securing what will be Donald Trump's most enduring domestic legacy: the appointment of nearly 300 federal judges, and threejustices. But McConnell and Trump's relationship was a marriage of convenience. Personally and temperamentally, they were oil and water.

Yesterday, that prospect appeared to vanish. Forty-five GOP senators voted in favor of the motion, introduced by McConnell's Kentucky colleague, asserting that impeaching a president already out of office was unconstitutional. McConnell was one of the 45. The vote makes it all but certain Trump will be acquitted when he is tried next month.

McConnell, another friend of his says, had honest, substantive doubts about the constitutionality of impeaching a resident who was no longer in office. Further, he disdained the House vote as a"sham. No due process, no hearings, nothing." Even if McConnell thought what Trump did was worth impeachment—and he indeed may, this source says—''he's an institutionalist, he wants things to be done properly. He thought what the House did in this case was half-assed.

The impeachment is not D v R. It is about wanting a democracy or an autocracy. That is what Trump was aiming for with inside help. If not convicted, what makes voters sure, it will not be tried again.

The vote was where to debate the constitutionality or not on the same day. It will be debated at trial. But.. I wonder if it will go to the Supreme Court and that will be the GOP path out of a vote.. Embarrassing for all if they do not vote to convict. 1/6 will not go away.

With keeping trump in your party and letting him get away with what he has done you are nurturing the rise of another Hitler. “Those that do not study the past , are doomed to repeat it “

I usually agree and enjoy Newsweek but this is a joke saying McConnell follow institutional rules. Calling this a sham after what he did in the previous impeachment and Merrik Garland. Don’t paint this clown with a sympathetic brush. He’s done more damage to the US than anyone

True, it's half assed. The articles should also have included charges of election tampering in Georgia and dereliction of duty for mishandling the covid19 crisis.

Trump had the Terrorists BELIEVE he would be with them.

1 yr has passed the only research paper for a natural origin of COVID-19 is the infamous study published last March in Nature: the Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2. At least two authors are getting money from China. One is honored by CCP. The virus was made & leaked from a PLA lab.
