Mysterious mounds in the southwest corner of the Amazon Basin were once the site of ancient urban settlements

In 1999, Prümers began studying a set of mounds in the Bolivian part of the Amazon Basin, outside the thick rainforest. There, a multitude of tree-covered mounds rise above a lowland area that floods during the rainy season.

Previous digs had revealed that these ‘forest islands’ contained traces of human habitation, including the remains of the mysterious Casarabe culture, which appeared around500. During one excavation, Prümers and his colleagues realized that they had found what looked like a wall, indicating that a permanent settlement had once occupied the area. The researchers also found graves, platforms and other indications of a complex society.

Prümers and his colleagues took advantage of lidar in 2019, when they flew a helicopter equipped with the technology over six areas near sites confirmed to have been occupied by the Casarabe people. The team got more than it bargained for, with lidar revealing the size and shape of 26 settlements, including 11 the researchers hadn’t been looking for — a monumental task that would have taken 400 years to survey by conventional means, Prümers says.

“We have this image of Amazonia as a green desert — devoid of any type of culture,” Prümers says. But given that civilizations rose and thrived in other tropical areas, he notes, “Why shouldn’t something like that exist here?”Why these settlements were abandoned after 900 years is still a mystery. Radiocarbon dating has revealed that the Casarabe disappeared around 1400.

Prümers points out that lidar images revealed reservoirs in the settlements, perhaps indicating that this part of the world wasn’t always wet — an environmental shift that might have driven people away. However, consistent pollen records reveal

Police patrol Bay Area schools in light of Texas shooting, offering peace of mindThough there were never any threats made, it was the reassurance students, parents and staff needed, with less than two weeks left of school. For good reason Peace of mind would be to have assault weapons gone from California, conduct background checks on every gun owner/buyer, mandatory safety training & psychological evals x gun buyers, gun owners liable x the use of their weapons. A cop at a school isn’t a solution, it’s a failure

Many Utah schools weren't built with security threats in mind, renovations are costly'We need to look at school safety through a comprehensive lens,' said student and school safety specialist Rhett Larsen. 'We shouldn't leap into assumptions that the issue is just guns, or the issue is just mental health concerns.' I think 🤔 ALL schools should we have a security fence around them with a security gate and a security guard and a metal detector as they walk through the gate. You wouldn't leave your children at home with the door unlocked I can see where Rhett Larsen’s priorities are: protecting guns at all costs, no matter how many kids have to die. Let's spend millions and millions of dollars to turn our schools into prisons with single entry points, metal detectors, and armed guards. Much easier than common sense gun laws.

Lasers reveal ancient urban sprawl hidden in the AmazonSouth America’s Casarabe culture built a network of large and small settlements in what’s now Bolivia centuries before the Spanish arrived. So amazing what is being discovered with the use of lidar-based 3-D animation technology. Article asks question, whether sites like Cotoca, in the Amazon, in what is today Bolivia, with 'low-density urban sprawl' should be included in what scientists consider a 'city.'
