Michael Avenatti is found guilty in federal court on all 3 counts in his Nike extortion trial

Michael Avenatti is guilty on all three counts he was facing, according to a decision by a jury in federal court in New York on Friday.

(CNN) Prosecutors said the lawyer threatened to publicly accuse athletic apparel maker Nike of illicitly paying amateur basketball players unless the company paid him millions of dollars. The government said Avenatti also betrayed his client, a youth basketball coach who made the allegations against Nike, by advocating for money for himself instead of the client. Avenatti was charged with transmission of interstate communications with intent to extort, attempted extortion and honest services wire fraud. His sentencing is scheduled for June 17 at 4 p.m., though the date could change, according to the judge.Read MoreAvenatti made the sign of the cross prior to the verdict being read, stared at the jury and looked down at the table. He told the lawyers,"Great job, you guys," and hugged one of them as he was led away to a backroom. He was not handcuffed. "Of course there will be an appeal," Scott Srebnick, Avenatti's lead defense attorney, told CNN. Srebnick said he was going to meet with Avenatti before his cient was taken to the Metropolitan Correctional Center, where he's been in custody throughout the trial. Avenatti still faces two additional trials for allegedly stealing Stormy Daniels' book advance and committing fraud in California. He is being held in jail for allegedly violating the terms of his bail in the California case.Gary Franklin, the youth basketball coach who Michael Avenatti represented, testified last week that he was bullied by Nike executives who forced him to make the illicit payments to top high school basketball players and their families. In 2018, the company ended its sponsorship of Franklin's program, the California Supreme. Franklin said he wanted Avenatti to get Nike to renew his team's sponsorship and get two Nike executives fired.Avenatti was in"crushing debt" at the time and wanted to use Franklin's case to make money, prosecutors said. The high-powered attorney saw Franklin as a"meal ticket," they argued. said Avenatti told them he would hold a press conference claiming the company illegally paid players. In exchange for not going public, Avenatti told the lawyers in one meeting Nike would have to pay Franklin $1.5 million for any claims he had and immediately pay Avenatti and another attorney $12 million, and guarantee $15 to $25 million in payments for an internal investigation, prosecutors said. Benjamin Homes, an associate attorney for Nike's outside law firm who took notes during several of the meetings with Avenatti, testified that it"evolved into really a shakedown."Franklin testified he was shocked to find out Avenatti was planning a press conference.Avenatti's attorneys have denied he committed any criminal acts because he was acting on behalf of his client who could legally make demands if they related to his claim. They argued Franklin and his friend, Jeffrey Auerbach, have changed their stories since Avenatti was arrested. Citing previous testimony and text messages between Auerbach and Franklin, defense attorneys said the two men were after"justice" and hired"Avenatti to be Avenatti" to get it. They had looked up firms that had"successfully sued Nike" and said it was time to"go after Nike," defense attorney Scott Srebnick said in closing arguments. Michael Avenatti has been kept in solitary confinement for 'his own safety,' prison warden says Auerbach also researched a jury verdict Avenatti won that totaled more than $400 million, and Auerbach and Franklin allegedly told Avenatti"do it your way" after hiring him, Srebnick said. Franklin said he wanted to root out corruption, and Avenatti was on a mission, defense attorneys argued. "The only way to root out corruption, the only way to dismiss employees for corruption is an internal investigation," Howard Srebnick, another defense attorney, said."He was on a mission for his client. He was on a mission to achieve the goals of his client, and again he would be paid along the way."Nike issued this statement after Avenatti was found guilty:"The verdict speaks volumes. We thank the jurors for their time and service which is the bedrock of the American judicial system."CNN's Taylor Romine contributed to this report. Read more: CNN Breaking News

Michael Avenatti Guilty on All Counts in Nike Extortion CaseEmbattled lawyer Michael Avenatti was convicted of extorting Nike, and of defrauding his client in a bid to reap millions from the shoemaker, in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday. It took jurors less than two days to deliver their guilty verdict against the California litigator, who shot to fame for Holy Toledo Batman ! Wasn't he going to run against Trump2020 too? brianstelter I hate thieves. I hate Nike. Not sure what side to root for here.

As of April of 2019, “CNN was the porn lawyer’s top cable enabler with a whopping 121 appearances; MSNBC earned a close second with 108. Broadcast networks hosted the attorney a combined 24 times (ABC: 12, CBS: 7, NBC: 5).” He was on your channel 74 times and you gave the criminal lots of airtime! Remember him running for presidency? We do! You’re all sick

Nice to see you admit it. Karma is a bitch Has he stopped beating his wife and kids yet? This liberal retard is a real gem. He and Geragos should partner up and form a new law firm called Gerajoker & Always Naughty, LLP.

This is a comical turn of events 😂 Bet this reporting hurt as cnn spent months promoting him as a presidential candidate. Justice When he goes to prison, the exciting thing is Trump could join him as soon as we vote his fat con ass out he should be locked up. I hope they can share a nice prison cell. CNN ARE U SAD LOL

👍👍for justice, and 🖕🖕to CNN for propping the scumbag up bc of the hatred for Trump.

Michael Avenatti Is Convicted in Nike Extortion TrialThe lawyer, who represented Stormy Daniels in lawsuits against President Trump, was found guilty of charges including attempted extortion and honest services fraud. But I thought he was going to run for President! 😂😂😂😂 👏👏👏👏👏👏 We are going to have colonized Mars before this thief gets out of jail! Well, as Trump has shown, this does not disqualify him from reigniting his presidential bid...

That's you candidate for president CNN? Riiiight. Nother crimnal gettin off, nuttin new heer... Another Democrat. Can all these people do is lose 😂 this is America....🙃🤡😝 So he is not your hero any longer? I guess that's what he gets for not being friends with Trump. We all know if he was, there would be no sentencing.

How sad! Your most favorite guest to bla bla bla! 😂

Michael Avenatti Found GuiltyMichael Avenatti, the brash, camera-ready lawyer for adult-film actress Stormy Daniels, was convicted on charges that he tried to extort more than $20 million from Nike by threatening to expose damaging information about the company. The weak mind of a sick person always ends with a prison sentence. Bye, bye Micheal Avenatti. now he's qualified to run against Trump Does this mean he can run for President now?

Wow. Seemed like such a stand up and moral guy? Oh the Holy Spirit! Sending my condolences to donlemon and the crew at CNN. He gonna see what Stormy been feeling all these years soon. Ass gonna get ground and pound It’s a good thing he cashed in and got in his CNN expert guest spots when he did. Will CNN have exclusive rights to Avenatti’s “from the Pokey” reports?

Such a quality guy...I remember when CNN pundits wanted him to run for President... You guys loved him! Sorry to hear Hahahahahahahahahaha Hey CNN you spent a lot of time on praising him and encouraged him to run for president. Hahaha

I don’t think Herr TRUMP will intervene in this case !!! He was your darling Fake News, wasn't he? Dear liberals, now THIS is the example of what a con looks like. It's important to understand the difference. OMG, I'm so sorry this is happening to you Ha! And you guys were blowing him on a regular basis. Even Stelter calling for him to run saying he’s vote for him.

CNNs poster boy. Holy shit cnn not posting bullshit😂😂thats a first And every CNN talking head wanted him to run for POTUS because he was attacking Trump. So, does this mean he’s not still going to run for president?

Aw, you mean the sleazy con artist you featured every freaking day for two years? You're gonna have to find another con man to be your anti-Trump hero. OOOOOHHH THE SWEETEST THING Mourning at cnn. Are they all wearing black today? Who? Did CNN cover this story throughout his trial? Or were they too embarrassed? conditionalfriendship phony

Crooked Attorney Maybe Barr wants to look into this one too. Or ask Trump for sentencing advice. when you come at the king, you best not miss. CNN, he was on your show so much why has he not been on lately, cause like everyone else you have who's lied but you put as gospel you shove to the side for the next lie. Really need to stop.

😂🤣😂🤣😂😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

But wait, you guys basically had him as an anchor with all his airtime & brianstelter thought he could be our next president. LOL. How could this happen to such a good guy?!? CNNisTrash MichaelAvenatti justdoit FakeNewsCNN gg The so-called lawyer cnn and other similar outlets glorified when Stormy Daniels had her day of fame. Now they’re all washing their hands of this guy

Well well you should be too, this was your Knight in shining armor. You had him on your show constantly, he was your guy to go against president trump ,once again you have egg on your face ,CNN Least Watched media there is. This should round out his resume to qualify him for superstar status in the DNC but not enough to get him disbarred.

Avenatti stinks like CNN. They tried to break Trump and Pelosi after them and he is still enjoying his leadership today as a great leader. Nobody can beat Trump. So is he going to get the Democratic nomination or not? To bad we can’t sue cnn like Nick Sandmann did for being a shit fake news source, this dumpster fire acting like it’s a news outlet needs to go away.

Didn’t you have him on everyday for a month? And didn’t Tater want him to run for President?

Guess that Presidential run is out now. Nike makes the jordans and makes billions. While MichaelJordaan only get percentages and not shares That’s a crime owenjohnswaby billiondollarbandit If I recall, Avenatti was touted by CNN as a star and made over 140 appearances on DNCMedia outlets over a short period of time.

Or even part owner ship! Does this mean he’s no longer a CNN contributor? Will he be able to run for POTUS in 2024, or do we have to wait until the sentencing? I honestly had to Google who this guy is, but now I did I learned he has been a bad bad boy. Shame on him and as we say in the military he gets to reek the suck.
