Mexico confirmed Friday its first case of a person infected with the coronavirus

Countries are scrambling to tackle a sharp rise in new coronavirus cases, as infections spread rapidly outside of China. Photo: MEDINA/AFPMEXICO CITY—, becoming the second country in Latin America after Brazil to report the presence of the virus.

Deputy Health Minister Hugo López-Gatell said the person diagnosed with the virus was placed in isolation along with several family members at the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases in Mexico City.
