OAKLAND — Chris Bassitt made his way from the outfield to the visitors bullpen, where he was greeted Saturday by a mix of New York Mets and Athletics fans chanting his name and requesting autographs.
Bassitt was the first to go during the A’s version of spring cleaning, dealt to the Mets in exchange for prospects Adam Oller and J.T. Ginn. New York began Saturday’s game 40 games over .500 at 96-56, 2 1/2 games up on Atlanta. It’s the kind of record Bassitt believes the A’s could have if they’d kept the old gang together.
Unsure whether his future was in the bullpen or the rotation, Bassitt regained his health in 2018 and blossomed in 2019, going 27-11 over the next three seasons and making the American League All-Star team in 2021. Although he played on contending teams the last three season with the A’s, Bassitt described the New York vibe as “crazy” in a good way, although losing games brings a different level of anxiety.
“It shows that this organization can develop players and it’s a matter of us now focusing on the same path and doing it with these guys.”
