Music, a children's play zone, food trucks, bike valet and free H-E-B lunches (while they last) will help usher in the park's latest evolution

Biking is encouraged, with a bike valet on hand, when Memorial Park hosts what organizers are calling “The Biggest Picnic in Texas” this weekend.

She calls the park’s expansion — which provides a safe pedestrian passage over Memorial Drive, connecting the north and south sides of Memorial Park — historic for Houston. Guests can bring their picnics and blankets or make use of shaded picnic tables. In addition to food trucks offering food for purchase on site, H-E-B is providing 1,000 free picnics — until they’re gone.: Memorial Park's Kinder Land Bridge and Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Prairie, 7575 Picnic Lane: Free; off-site parking encouraged. Free shuttle service to the event's front gates from Lot H, a paid lot at 1643 Memorial Dr.

At one station, kids will spot footprints of wildlife that use the prairie as a habitat, including coyotes, armadillos, turtles, skunks and snakes. They’ll learn how each is vital to the ecosystem. Clements hopes every guest will take the opportunity to walk to the top of the land bridges for a majestic view.

An arcing timeline demonstrates how the land has evolved and illustrates the people who have helped tend to it over thousands of years, so park-goers can “experience the vastness of time,” Clements says.
