If ShahidForChange falls short of the 25% he got four years ago, it will be another sign that progressive SF is in retreat. However, if he does better this time, it may be a sign that after Pelosi, The City’s representation in D.C. may move further left.

Shahid Buttar, a Stanford-educated lawyer and activist who has never held elective office and who lost to Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi in 2018 and 2020, is attempting to unseat her again in November.

Yet Pelosi’s next term may be very different because she will likely be in the minority as the Republicans seemed poised to win back control of the House. Moreover, because it is likely her last term, she will have less leverage when negotiating with members of either party. All this raises the question of why she is running at all.

When I asked Buttar how he differed most from Pelosi, he responded, “The biggest area is corruption and the role of corporate influence and the role of steering corporate interest in federal policy making. That breaks down to a bunch of different subsidiary issues.” Buttar then explained how he saw that corruption — specifically the role of corporate America in funding campaigns — as leading Pelosi to conservative positions on issues such as health care and climate change.

From a campaign perspective, it is hard to argue with Pelosi’s approach.

ShahidForChange I mean, the entire left in SF has no business with Shahid. I don’t think it will mean anything. He hasn’t built any significant coalitions. His campaign is supported by people outside of San Francisco.

ShahidForChange No it won’t. Not that it will stop y’all from portraying it as a referendum on progressive politics, though. 🤷 Pelosi dgaf what policies voters prefer. The conservative wing of the CDP sees itself as a patrician class entitled to the votes of plebeians in their demesne. 😒

ShahidForChange Love the way you call him 'symbolic,' then put it on him if he doesn't 'do better this time'. What could have been actual journalism turned into 'we expect this candidate to lose.' Real journalism would have been reporting the primary before it occurred & bio of the candidates.

ShahidForChange 'symbolic'? 'not the strongest possible candidate'? I mean, thanks for at least actually covering his campaign, that's so much more than so many outlets have been doing. Yet also, poison the well much? Yeesh.

ShahidForChange He’s been antagonizing a lot of his former allies since 2020. Using him as a barometer of the SF progressive movement seems overly simplistic. Plus, his campaign hasn’t been as visible this time.

ShahidForChange Except not even progressives like him. Dude’s hardly a barometer for the political winds of San Francisco.

ShahidForChange He got 25% of the vote last time. 0 chance of winning. He has not even been visible this cycle. He didn't even update any of his campaign materials. He's just a perennial candidate at this point.

ShahidForChange nope

ShahidForChange idk the whole sexual harassment thing might also play a role here

ShahidForChange Shahid's issue is not so much his policies but his approach. Hey didn't send a single mailer in 2020 despite being the most well-funded challenger to Pelosi in recent history. This has less to do with how progressive SF is and more to do with how bad of a candidate he is.

Shahid isn’t representative of progressive SF, and his failures are his own - not theirs.
