AmyForliti He couldn't breathe because he was dying of a fentanyl overdose.
He would pass out from lack of oxygen and not die if his breathing was restricted but not so much he could still talk. There still would be enough oxygen drawn in to sustain life. I feel he died of cardiac arrest from the drugs and alcohol he had used.

We were told the same thing in my EMT class years ago by the teacher. It is widely believed that if you can talk, you can breathe. Glad to learn better, but the training definitely needs to be better.

The reason the police can tell if the arrestee is telling the truth or just acting out is that the person can speak and they can see the difficulty in breathing.
