Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell addressed the January 6 attack on the Capitol, saying 'the mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people.'

McConnell's remarks as he opened the Senate were his most severe and public rebuke of outgoing President Donald Trump. The Republican leader vowed a “safe and successful” inauguration of Biden on Wednesday at the Capitol, which is under extremely tight security.

Trump's last full day in office Tuesday is also senators’ first day back since the deadly Capitol siege, an unparalleled time of transition as the Senate presses ahead to his impeachment trial and starts confirmation hearings on Biden's Cabinet. The start of the new session of Congress will force senators to come to terms with the post-Trump era, a transfer of power like almost none other in the nation's history. Senators are returning to a Capitol shattered from the riot, but also a Senate ground to a halt by the lawmakers' own extreme partisanship.

Mayorkas told the Senate Homeland Security Committee that if confirmed he would do everything possible to ensure"the desecration of the building that stands as one of the three pillars of our democracy, and the terror felt by you, your colleagues, staff, and everyone present, will not happen again." Trump's impeachment is forcing Republican senators to re-evaluate their relationship with the outgoing president who is charged with inciting a mob of supporters to storm the Capitol as Congress was counting the Electoral College votes to confirm Biden's. A protester died during the riot and a police officer died later of injuries; three other people involved died of medical emergencies.

'They were provoked by the president and other powerful people,' McConnell says, 'and they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like.'

Mob = deplorables? How life changes.

Self confession after over 12 years of doing the same!!!

Well good--but he should get a little more clear and say it out loud: there was not election fraud and people need to get a grip. Seriously otherwise drumf will continue to divide the nation and rile up loonies on toxic conspiracy theories and lies lies lies

Looks like McConnell is tired of the conman too. We may finally get Trump impeached in the Senate, and be rid of him forever.

Thats great good for him now vote to impeach him and remove him for good

What irony

Let's hope everything goes smoothly! 👍

'Other powerful people.' Aka 'see wasn't me! I'm innocent!' Dude may not have spoken to THAT crowd THAT day but he was giving implicit agreement by his actions every day before.

Don’t you all wonder about the timing of this statement? He is keeping Trump in check till he’s out the door. Trump knows if he goes nuts on the pardons he will get convicted in the Senate.

This is a clear signal to the Senate GOP. Trump must be convicted in the Senate trial. LockHimUpNow

Trump Attorney: It’s ‘Offensive’ to Quote Rioters Saying They Attacked Capitol Because of Trump - WSJ.comOne of Donald Trump’s lawyers criticized impeachment managers for presenting evidence of rioters citing the former president as a reason for storming the U.S. Capitol, calling it 'an antithesis of the healing process to continue to show the tragedy' Tell that to those who were raped or abused when they have to endure physical testing and verbally repeating the trauma. Then they have to repeat it in court. If they want justice, the system requires them to be retraumatized over and over again. It's called 'evidence'. That thing you have when there isn't a conspiracy. People in that crowd made a personal choice. Everyone is responsible for their own actions. No one can be held accountable for the actions of others. Nor, can someone use the excuse “they made me.” Watch the verdict in “A Few Good Men” and the discussion after.

Lindsey Graham Warns That Pardoning Capitol Rioters Would ‘Destroy’ TrumpSenator Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) on Sunday advised the president not to grant presidential pardons to the rioters who stormed the Capitol this month, warning that doing so would “destroy” Trump. “Mr. President, your policies will stand the test of time. You’re the most important figure in the Republican party. You can shape the direction of the party. Keep your movement alive,” Graham said on Fox News. “There are a lot of people urging the president to pardon folks who participated in defiling the Capitol, the rioters,” Graham continued. “I don’t care if you went there and spread flowers on the floor, you breached the security of the Capitol, you interrupted a joint session of Congress, you tried to intimidate us all, you should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, and to seek a pardon of these people would be wrong. I think it would destroy President Trump and I hope we don’t go down that road.” On Wednesday, a large group of Trump supporters overpowered Capitol Police and forced their way into the halls of Congress. Pence and the assembled lawmakers evacuated the Senate floor, where a joint session of Congress was being held to certify the presidential election results. The violence followed a rally outside the White House earlier in the day where President Trump addressed the “Save America March” and repeated his claims that November’s election was rife with voter fraud that threatened to deprive him of his rightful second term. The violence on January 6 resulted in five dead, including a Capitol Police officer. Since then, dozens of criminal cases have been brought in connection with the riot. Graham defended Trump’s rhetoric at the rally, which received bipartisan condemnation and sparked a second impeachment against the president by House Democrats. “President Trump never said, ‘Go into the capitol and try to interrupt a joint session of Congress.’ That was the choice they made and they need to live with that choice,” Graham said. Graham added that that seems like a reason we should do it A warning from 1965 I look forward to day when press moves on and covers other Republicans and focuses less on Lindsay.
