William 'Rick' Singer, the ringleader in a college admissions cheating scandal that spanned the country, is expected to be sentenced today by a federal judge.

His sentence all but marks the end of "Operation Varsity Blues," the moniker for the prosecutors' investigation that uncovered a cheating ring of approximately 50 defendants.

Prosecutors said Singer was the mastermind of the decadeslong scheme, which has since become the subject of at least four books, a Lifetime movie and a Netflix documentary. Singer was "exceptionally valuable" following his plea deal, according to prosecutors' sentencing memorandum. He agreed to have his phone tapped to help indict his former clients and accomplices, allowing the government to secure the convictions.

Still, his cooperation was laden with missteps, prosecutors wrote. He met in person with at least six of his former clients to warn them about the investigation and was subsequently convicted of obstructing justice.

Mastermind of the Varsity Blues college admission scandal is about to learn his fateRick Singer — the mastermind of the college admissions scandal from 2019 — is set to be sentenced on Wednesday. Singer pleaded guilty to making $25 million by selling what he called a “side door” into top universities. A just sentence for Singer would be 4 years at LibertyU tha muthafuka look like he sell organs... 😆not the one in church... 😅 Why send the dude to prison? Just fine him. The societal impact vs kids who applied to elite schools losing out just don’t amount to jail time, in my meager opinion. I never understood why Martha Stewart did time too. Just fine her cash. Jail isn’t always the answer.
