Mailer rose to cross-examine Chief Marshall. He walked up with a slight swagger—something between the new gun in town and Perry Mason—and his first questions were delivered in a sinister Texas drawl; throughout the hearing, he shifted gears between this accent and his normal one , according to the dramatic voltage he felt was required.This drew a blank.
