The majority of counties with the highest COVID-19 death rates showed stronger support for President Trump in 2020 than they did 4 years ago, according to an NPR analysis.

Support for President Trump increased in 2020 in many of the U.S. counties that lost lives at the highest rate to COVID-19, according to an NPR analysis.

Trump's support rose even in the county with the highest death rate per capita in the country: Gove County, Kansas, where there have been 18 deaths out of the town's 2,600 residents. There, Trump's tally increased from a 74-point win against Hillary Clinton in 2016 to a 76-point win against Biden. For example,"they may have been simpatico with the president's approach to the pandemic," which led people to do things like be less likely to wear masks and impose lockdowns to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Kousser says.

conducted by The Associated Press, 73% of those who did so voted for Biden. The second-highest-ranked issue was the economy and jobs, with 28% of voters choosing that issue. Of those, 81% voted for Trump.

But"if you are someone who already trusts the president and you trust him to handle the crisis, then you are both not as concerned as Democrats are and you're more willing to trust that he is the person who can keep you safe and keep the country safe from COVID," she says.Gadarian and others note that many factors influence how people vote.

It could also be that places that have strong support for the president also are the most likely to experience more deaths for other reasons, such as their populations having higher rates of risk factors such as older age, other health problems or inferior health care, he says.

I weep not for Republicans who have disavowed the scientists’ call to wear a mask. Too damn bad.

I'm not sure that the graph convincingly shows this

This makes no sense.

I still don’t get. Wtf are they thinking ?

Go figure! The whole Midwest is burning while trump fiddled and his supporters denied what was in front of their faces.

Worked the polls Tuesday, rural Alabama, when i asked voters for the ok to touch their drivers license (We scan barcodes). A good number made fun of me for asking. I would reply 'I'm being considerate of your preferences.' That shut them up. Mostly.

Because they are the Red states🤣🤣

Not Navajo Nation! Heroes

Stupidity is endemic while coronavirus is pandemic

There is no excuse for ignoring CDC guidelines, however, there are many confounding factors that lead to this apparent association. Higher death rates are likely in rural, poor counties w/o healthcare infrastructure, less people there can work from home, etc.

Some things are not worth the time or energy to ponder.

It shows how stupid people can be? Unbelievable! Now I understand how Jim Jones did it

Play stupid games. Win stupid prizes. 🤷‍♂️

🤦🏼‍♀️

Yes. Vote for the guy who let your meemaw and pappy die. He should be able to turn it around in another four years. I hear he’s got a killer healthcare plan too.

Yeah, Karma is a bitch.

We call that a cult

WTF

And yet, we are all still here!

Shocker. They’re the same ones that don’t wear masks.

How can NPR put election results into terms with a virus? Progressive mindset is poisonous

There are people hungry for leadership &recognition. Trump has always been out there. Those people are drawn to him. They think he was a business man, who earned great wealth & they want to sail on his coat tails. Like sheep to slaughter. We can only lift people up who want to be

Lemmings following Dear Leader right over the cliff. This behavior so runs against the grain of everything the Continental Army stuck their necks out for.

mareupiper_17 you mean all the dumbshits

The keystone of his failed campaign

'Trump infected his followers with his numerous super spreader events and no mask policy and therefore the majority of counties with the highest COVID-19 death rates showed ' There, fixed.

We here in ND have the highest rates in the country. My state just elected a GUY WHO DIED FROM COVID A MONTH AGO! Doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result is insanity. That’s where we are.

This is what you would call the textbook definition of irrationality!

What a surprise. NOT.

Check out this telecast please

Yeah, bc they believe HIM. They’re gonna have a really rude awakening in the next few weeks or so when those Covid cases from his rallies come crashing down in their communities.

Well, then, they won't be around to vote stupidly next time. NoQ TermLimits FreedomFromReligion FactsMatter TruthMatters ScienceMatters NoQ

Can only respond with one phrase... WTF. This is literal insanity

Would be interesting to study causality here. Is their support of Trump and belief in his rhetoric driving more sever impact from covid because they are less inclined to follow recommendations and basic science?

Performing this study was a complete waste of time. Anyone with half a brain could tell you that.

You can’t fix stupid.

I live in a ruby red state. I’m not seeing mask wearing or social distancing. They are acting like we live in pre-Covid times.

That makes perfect since because those counties called it a hoax and didn’t follow recommendations for wearing masks, social distancing and limiting exposure...because they’re Trumpets!

Counterintuitive, and how they befuddle us.

Our county death rate is freaking 3.7% no masks anywhere, lots of group gatherings, and overwhelmingly red. Bloody idiots.

Hardly rocket science

You could also correlate this to average IQ of areas that strongly support trump.

FakeNews

Poor framing of the title, implies causation. Deep inside, in para 9 your expert does warns you against inferring causation

I’m sure there is another explanation 🙄

Well, absolutely. Reckless enough to support trump, reckless enough to die from COVID.

I like leaders who don't seduce their followers into life threatening behavior.

Insane.

Isn’t this an example of natural selection at work?

Death cult

I come here for the news. I have always had respect for NPR and am a monthly contributor. This headline is common sense.

Yup, it's a cult.

Dang. What a shame.

You know, there might soon be a conspiracy theory of 'Democrats created Covid to get rid of Trump and kill his supporters'

The least surprising tweet in the history of tweets.

Well, yeah. If you don't believe COVID-19 is real and wear a mask and stop the spread.....

'I ain't wearin' no ding dang mask' *dies 2 weeks later*

I am gonna guess they are also the most religious counties.

Gaslighting works?

Awwww thoughts and prayers

A classic case of battered person syndrome.

This can be a false conclusion, it might easily be that those areas where more pro Trump to begin with and as they don’t use masks and don’t take the virus seriously they got sick more. It doesn’t necessarily mean they voted more because they got sick

Shows you how dumb they are.

Amazing

They're dying to support and believe Trump. And Trump won't feel guilty about it.

Natural self-selection at work.

You can’t fix stupid

Just stop already, . Such a non sequitur.

covid 19s not real. why did NY get slammed but a blue state?

“Stupid is as Stupid Does.” F. Gump

I think that says I hate the rest of you so much I’d rather die than accept the truth.

Go figure

So, it does impact the brain...

Because the black and brown people they hated were the ones dying of Covid?

because they don't want to wear the mask... covidiots

Was this the local HS AP stats project? Anyone, literally any breathing human being, could have predicted this. You cannot save Trump supporters from themselves.

The correlation is intriguing

This makes me sad

It’s a death cult

I’m shocked. SHOCKED.

Or maybe they like the way he handled it🤷🏽‍♂️

Chicken? Or the egg?

Allow me to explain: CovFeFe

'What we've seen is over time that the biggest determinant of people's worries about COVID-19 and their attitudes about COVID-19 is not where they live or the COVID-19 deaths in their area, but it is their partisanship,' one political scientist said.
