More than a hundred teachers in Little Rock, Ark., refused to show up for in-person classes Monday, saying they're concerned about COVID-19 and are only willing to teach remotely. The district has threatened to fire them.

In Little Rock, Arkansas, more than a hundred teachers didn't show up for class on Monday.

"This is not a strike," Gordon continued."We are completely and totally willing to work and serve our students virtually in a manner that keeps everyone safe and alive."Mike Poore, Little Rock School District superintendent, said in aOn Monday, a combination of substitutes, district staff and members of the state Department of Education filled-in for the missing teachers.

The union plans to push back on any disciplinary action. And if any are terminated, there could be legal action, Gordon said. Teachers are still working from home, only they're teaching their online classrooms instead, she said. The union claims that schools and classrooms are not being adequately cleaned and that many students and employees are not wearing masks properly.

Time to hire your own. Form pod schools. Bypass the public system.

So they’ve got an abundance of applications for teachers wanting to be hired?

Thats because their concern about COVID spreading in children is completely irrational given the degree to which the flu affects children...and so usually when you dont show up for work without a legitimate reason, you get threatened with job termination 🤷‍♂️

They're basically saying 'we're not dying to babysit your kids'.

Look no further than Florida. We've been open for weeks. The virtual learners have been sent back by the parents. Literally, 1/3 are left. So, point me to the reports of all the teachers dying like flies because the kids are not. Two words: NEA and Democrats.

Do it, fire them.

Sifill_LDF I'm sure lots of other states would hire them & be sensitive to their concerns, y'all there was a teacher shortage before pandemic, can you afford to lose them?

Fire Them for Breach of Contract! Teachers all over the Country have gone back to the Classroom and it hasn't been a big deal at all. You know if there was anything to be concerned about the media would have already blown it way out of proportion!

Solidarity to teachers doing what's right for the community✊

There are strategies in place for teachers & staff to be safe. Masks & social distancing. Hand washing, sanitizer & frequent disinfecting. Screening of students & staff w/ symptoms. PLUS children rarely become ill w/ COVID19. These teachers are hijacking education. Fire them all.

Thank GOD! Forever wining about how bitterly unfair there lives are. Under paid over worked! I AGREE! DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! You are already organized! U r educated! Create CHANGE! Be the change! Get a raise while you are at it! Refuse to go until u get what u want🙄🤷🏼‍♀️😱

Good for them

Fire them

A teaching shortage across the country and your looking to fire hundreds...

The district knows they can’t fire them, not till after Mitch McConnell gets his employer immunity rammed through.

Ok furlough and bring on new teachers

Bitcoin just broke a record for longest standing over 10k! So glad we can buy just a fraction of one. It's going to the moon!

Many who are deemed “essential” have worked through this entire thing to keep society going. Why should we still pay teachers and give them a pass?

Sifill_LDF Arkansas voted for trump and so did those idiot teachers so go to work!

AFTacademics geo3550 Road trip, anyone?

Let's go March on Little Rock and shut it down.

Good. Administrators are doing everything they can to sacrifice teachers and students while keeping themselves out of danger. Every teacher in the country needs to walk out. They can’t all be fired. Admins can’t do their own jobs much less that of teachers.

Good for them!

My kids teacher died from Covid in the spring.

Wow, that's practically, 'Your money or your life!' But this time, it's 'Your life or your money!'

Ha sure fire teachers and have the parents home school okay. People don’t get it. Teachers will refuse to be disposable. Why because teachers will do all they can to protect students. In this case protect them even if they lose their job.

PhotosByCooper Good for the teachers! Citizens and parents should be protecting our teachers and kids.

Lazy

Teachers don’t want to risk their lives for the measly pay.

good for them, solidarity

These teachers have a right to be concerned. Covid has showed no sign of slowing down.

openculture And replace them with the cutouts from the MLB games? Scarecrows?

We need a GeneralStrike

At least we know that Little Rock Ark has smart teachers. Now if all teachers would do the same thing COVID-19 would slightly decline. BidenHarris2020 WearAMask

Crazy. Time to call out the district.

Firing 100 teachers seems a little extreme.

My wife teaches both online and in person 9th grade in TX. Her school has 2200 kids, 70% chose in person. It’s the 6th wk, over 200 kids n families quarantined now. Half teachers have preexist conditions.

Now do grocery store employees

Teachers in Texas are being told if you cannot fulfill your contract duties you will be let go. The hours we are being asked to work are unimaginable to any other profession. We don’t get overtime. Today was parent night remotely, I sat at a chair from 8am- to 8pm.

Then who is going to replace them. But then this is Arkansas where ignorance is job 1

Yay teachers!!!

Stay strong 💪 don’t settle, they can learn online.

And replace them with people anxious to teach immediately in a classroom full of kids? Yeah, whatever.

Because teachers are smart and politicians are idiots. Well done Little Rock teachers!!

Shit leadership starts at the top.

So if they fire them then what? Where would they get replacements?

My vote is with the TEACHERS of AR, for they are paying heed to SCIENCE !

Fire them

Teacher sending you all love and support from Tampa, FL ❤ Keep up the fight ✊🏻

Virtual learning is child abuse.

Are they still getting paid Private school are open here. Good fire them get teachers that actually want to teach, poor kids having them lockdown at home for months not having making that their norm.

We need teachers. I can't believe they are being threatened just because they don't want to risk their health.

Why is NPR so focused on what others do? The survival rate for the China Flu is 99.5% survival unless you are over age 70, and your survival rate drops to 94%, if you have other health issues. But NPR is busy promoting their own agenda.

Let em try and then the teachers should sue the district of

Who wants to get sick or die for Trump? Let Trumpist teach.

It's all BS, nice job, fucking media.

I’m teaching virtually but can work from school. For over a week my classroom wasn’t cleaned after I and others used it. I’m also only provided baby wipes to clean. This is a real problem and we don’t even have students in building yet.

More unneeded deaths

Fuckin cowards...

fox5sandiego Santee SanDiego

Hope they do get fired. You can’t not show up to work because of this level of risk

safety first

Wow. Go teachers. Good for them.

Good for them to stand their ground. Rather be fired than dead.

Sad on both sides

'No. 1 concern, however, is increasing COVID-19 cases in the district and at a state level. The district reported 33 new positive student cases and six positive staff cases since Sept. 21. About 190 additional staff members and students were quarantining as a precaution.'

I’m with those teachers.

Wow. I’m thankful I’m retired. Although I really miss my students and my friends I’d be really scared to teach in person now. It’s horrible for the teachers and horrible for the kids too. Covid is real and awful. My super healthy 34 son got it. Super super sickfor for 2,wks.recov

Rat GOP doesn't care about people. NO FEDERAL PLAN. 45,000 new coronavirus cases a day. 205,000 deaths. VoteBlue up and down the ballot for people who care about us. Donate. Volunteer. BidenHarris Vote early to protect your vote.

Good for them. People (teachers especially) need to start standing up for themselves when it comes to our schoolyard bully of a president who doesn’t care about our best interest. If he kills electors off, he may have enough votes to win re-election.

Little Rock schools made history 60 years ago, now they will it again. We must protect our teachers and youth at all costs. Without them, we have nothing. ProtectAllWorkers EducationNeverDies

Social distancing saves lives. A vaccine is close. We need to reduce infection before the second wave hits us during cold and flu season.

Well the parents are currently doing all the teaching under remote anyways... So good luck don’t let the door hit you in the ass... you have no leverage here... happy these people are no longer teacher our youth as they clearly have no clue how life works

“It’s for the children”

This is what fear does. Good job, CDC, WHO, and Mr. Fauci. All three should be dismantled and/or fired.

I’ll go teach, just pay for me to stay down there.

So fire them and get some real teachers. There, that was easy.

They need to Unionize.

Actually it's the other way around - teachers are wanting to teach kids in person and show up - the union doesn't want them too.

Fire them for sure!!!

And who exactly are they gonna bring in as replacements...? This is just the kind of situation for which public sector unions exist

...and then?

Good for the teachers
