For many workers who have claimed unemployment, the $600 a week is two times more than their previous salary. So with states ending their lockdowns, returning to work could mean a pay cut — and putting their personal health at risk.

Mark Felix/AFP/AFP via Getty ImagesPreschool teacher Lainy Morse has been out of work for more than two months. But the Portland, Ore., child care center where she worked is considering a reopening. Morse is dreading the idea, as much as she loves the infants and toddlers she cared for.

The Cracker Barrel restaurant where Avery Adams worked has just resumed limited indoor dining again, after weeks of takeout-only service. But the Gravel Switch, Ky., resident is in no hurry to go back."I don't feel like it's over yet," Adams says, pointing to a jump in coronavirus deaths in Kentucky at the beginning of last week."I would wait to see, as things reopen, if the caseload increases again.

Rachel Davis runs a consignment shop in Warrensburg, Mo. Since reopening this month, she's been buying hand sanitizer by the gallon. are making more in jobless benefits than they did at work — in some cases two to three times as much. It's a stark reminder of just how low the pay is in many hard-hit industries such as restaurants and retail.

What by pulling unemployment benefits? I missed something!

Killing small businesses. They can’t get their employees back.

NPR gives a voice to the billionaires. Just like the rest of corporate media, a blackout on workers protests, and strikes. Pandering to the billionaires!

And for others it’s less then what they make so lets stop bitching and pay attention to the PROBLEM Trump

(1) Good for them. Not so good for others who work hard and pay their taxes; (2) maybe the policies need to be changed to encourage people to return to work. (3) there seems no need for that 3-trillion House stimulus proposal.

Terrible framing. The article doesn’t give any indication of the relative share of unemployment recipients who are receiving more than their old wages. Please get an editor; using terms like “many” and “millions” are harmful if the actual occurrence rate is a low.

WYPublicRadio Way to use terrible conservative anti-worker framing instead of questioning why workers aren't being paid a living wage to begin with. Do better.

This clearly shows what those supporting the economy have been saying all along - give an incentive to people Not to work and they will take it single handily. My taxes are not going to be used to support free wheelers - my Vote will be my contribution to fix this idiocy.

Lowering taxes would help. Taxes take out at least 20% of a workers paycheck. Instead of bitching about employers first, how about we cut out the biggest thief of them all. Taking money out before you even get paid. Think about that for a second.

Paying someone $300/week should be illegal for full time work, especially on the richest country on earth

Maybe this is an indication that the living wage movements were onto something after all...

If people are dumb enough to spend that extra money on lifestyle choices instead of saving it, well it’s no wonder the $600 a week was more than their original salary

Just like the Dems planned. Just another way to try to weaken the country so that they could slip their moronic senile molester of a candidate into office.

Workers should own the means of production

“For many workers who have claimed unemployment, the $600 a week is two times more than their previous salary. “ This shows that these workers are being underpaid to begin with. $600 a week is not a living wage.

Interesting there are 3 times as many RideSharing drivers as there are Day care workers in the U.S.

They are not “earning” more! The handout is double.

21,581,471 workers under 15/hr at avg of say $9.38 - $404,652,581,250 annually Compared to US Total of $7,126,928,094,000 is 5.68% If we raised to avg 15/hr this would change to $647,444,130,000 or 9.08% Diff- $242,791,548K - Absorbed the the FT earner = $2,376/earner annually

People without skills have been making more money staying at home...no wonder there are so many job openings that cannot be filled right now in a time of 20% unemployment (thank you, China).

This illustrates not that people are freeloaders who don’t want to work but rather, that we have grossly underpaid our workers and shifted to a part-time workplace.

Give the $600 to the employees who return to work as an incentive. Be fair.

Are you saying people try to make rational decisions regarding finances? WAaAAaaaAAAa? Since when?

Normally my check is about $500. A week. Unemployment was $158.00 🤷🏼‍♀️

Indentured servitude Circa 2020

Another poorly written article that does not tell you the total U.S. workforce that makes less than $15/hr. I am getting 21,600,000 of the total workforce of 151,437,000 representing 14.3% of all U.S. workers. Woman average ~9,000 less per year than Men - BTW

Prior to the pandemic we put our lives at risk every single day.

For many workers who could not claim the $600 a week that is two times more than their weekly wages but had to remain at “essential” work and putting their personal health at risk, the states reopening only means more risk and still no decent pay, perk, or military flyovers. Geez

If they are worried of there personal health, they should get a job at a nursing home. Apparently Timmy thinks they are safe.

If true that’s embarrassing and the minimum wage should be increased to at least this level

I’m netting just about exactly what I was pre-furlough on UI. So the $600 makes sense for -me-, but I also make considerably more than my fellow food service folks. They should’ve found a way to just up UI to 100% of avg. income in every state.

It’s about 1/2 of my normal weekly take home! Not everyone is making bank by being on unemployment’

Maybe companies should be paying people living wages instead of exploiting workers then.

Do better with the headline. Bad take.

Get paid what your worth, for the job your doing.

What if we up the minimum wage but less people will get a job, does this sound better to you?

The consumer determines your worth. If you request more than people are willing to pay then you will get nothing

If that doesn't say something about the state of wages in this country, you're simply not paying attention. UNIONISE NOW.

DefundNPR

OH FFS....YOU OPENLY TELLING PEOPLE TO LIE. DO YOU KNOW THE federal charges for lying on your unemployment HUGE. SO REMEMBER FOLKS....WHEN YOU IN COURT....SAY told me to do it. Don't think it will help you....but...better than just....duhhhhh

If you are earning more on unemployment than you were at your regular job, then you weren't being paid enough and your employer is exploiting you.

Lol.ahaha. if you're not 78 and fat there is no real risk. shut the f****** NPR

'could mean a pay cut' -- That's NOT because unemployment is too high -- it's because their PAY IS TOO LOW.

Essential workers deserve essential pay of $15/hr. Federal minimum is STILL at $7.25, which was set in 2009.

I've worked every day of this pandemic, at no additional pay. And I'm supposed to feel sorry for people who have been paid 2x their previous wage (or more) to take 2 month off? That's not how this works.

Come on down to Florida where the state just ignores your claim.

They should only get what they were payed when employed. Giving them more is a waste of the taxpayer money and a way to keep them dependent on the government. It is discriminating against those essential workers who worked the entire time of this government lock down!

Isn’t that a sad statement about the shape America is in? The unemployment payments don’t fully cover the needs of a family of four. Lo & behold, salaries are BELOW that level? That’s the American nightmare: what unchecked & unrestrained capitalism did to the American dream.

How many? What is the definition of 'many'? Is it more than a few? If so, how many more? Let's be specific here and not get into the business of riling people up.

Stay on unemployment.

Let me guess: NPR thinks that means we need a government funded minimum income for all.

My friend’s been in business for twenty years. He CLOSED the doors last week permanently. Why ? “I cannot get the help ! No one wants to come back because they’re making SO much more NOT to work !” Civil unrest I$ coming .....

This is the kind of Left wing BS we get fr the biased media. We should now feel bad for people who are going back to work who were paid more by taxpayers than they receive working for their employers. Simply unbelievable !!!

DONT RETURN TO WORK. DEMAND HIGHER WAGES. THE BUSINESS OWNING PARASITES CANT SURVIVE WITHOUT YOUR LABOR. UNITE!

Instead of questioning why unemployment benefits are better for some, maybe we should question why some working people earn so little. If you give your life to a job, your job should give you a life in return.

This is a great argument for paying our workers more.

If unemployment pays more than working does that mean you won capitalism or something? This is sickening

It’s almost like not raising wages for 40 years has resulted in people being underpaid.

Hmm maybe we’ve actually been underpaying poor people all along

We have to understand that this is a reflection of low wages rather than an issue with Unemployment Benefits. With this crisis, the lowest paying jobs that would be relegated to 'well at least you are getting paid' status have become 'Essential' to keep our society running. FFT.

I wish the discourse on this would be framed that employers should be paying their employees a livable hourly wage. - signed a restaurant employee currently benefiting from the add’l $600/wk as it keeps me at my *yearly* avg hr rate.

NPR encourages people not to work. NPR wants total economic collapse so we can get the communism NPR wants.

They should have never been paid more than their current salary. Now, let them slap masks on and get their asses back to work.

That can’t be correct because Mar 25th Republicans had these same concerns about benefits being a hindrance to getting people to go back to work.

If minimum wage had kept up with productivity like it did from 1938 to 1968, a 40 hour/week minimum wage job would currently pay around $980 a week.

The problem here is, workers are not paid their worth. It’s inhumane if people are contributing to society, they should be paid a living wage.

That's more than I make. I'm not hating, tho. They need to pay us more.

unemployment benefits are paid for by workers. its their money employers should pay their employees a living wage if they dont want employees making more on unemployment

I just got bells palsey and will have to deal with this for 1 to 3 weeks. I couldn't wait tables like this and would be without income for that time due to no worker protections in the food service industry. Luckily I'm still furloughed

Let's go back to work.

That's the whole idea behind 'reopening', the upper class' refusal to pay for anything that doesn't benefit their own. If it's safe, then business don't need immunity from liability.

If unemployment pays more than your job, we have a problem with wages.

We need to pay all workers a decent wage and provide health care.

Opinion: Sharing your job with a coworker could help prevent more mass layoffs'One way to reduce the economic damage may be job-sharing, an approach that focuses on maximizing jobs by reducing workers' hours rather than resorting to layoffs or furloughs,' Jason Ward writes for CNNBusiness Perspectives. Business Who makes this stuff up? job-sharing? Only CNN would mention that term. Business So everyone will be poor. Business Either way it means you don’t make enough to pay for food. Unless you can find a job that pays full time. I hear the trades are a pretty good place to look right now.
