According to arresting officer Cpl. Ben Payne from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources , an anonymous text message tipped him off to illegal hunting and he was able to see a video of a man posing with a dead alligator.American alligators are an example of animals that have been saved by conservation efforts. The large reptiles were once reduced to low numbers in the early 1900s due to unregulated hunting and a loss of their habitat.
Due to increasing numbers limited and regulated alligator hunting is permitted in the state of Georgia, subject to population evaluations. Payne told WRDW that he was aware of where Devore's hunting camp was and had attended the site where he found a rifle and a dead alligator.According to the National Wildlife Federation , American alligators are currently listed as threatened. The animals can grow to lengths of more than 12 feet and weigh as much as 1,000 pounds.
