Hundreds of black-clad Malaysian youth have rallied in central Kuala Lumpur to demand the resignation of the prime minister over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, as new cases soared in a surge that has also become a political crisis.

Public anger against Muhyiddin Yassin’s unelected government, which took power in March 2020 after forming a coalition with the opposition, has built up as cases jumped eightfold since January. New daily infections breached 10,000 on July 13 for the first time and have stayed there since, despite a virus emergency in January and a lockdown since June 1. Total deaths have risen to nearly 9,000. Nearly 20% of the population has been fully vaccinated.

Wearing face masks while holding black flags and placards, the protesters chanted “Fight! Fight!” and “Muhyiddin resign.” Some carried mock corpses wrapped in white cloth to depict the growing virus death toll. They put forward three demands: the resignation of Muhyiddin, resumption of regular parliamentary sessions and automatic loan moratorium to help those hit by the pandemic. They dispersed peacefully after nearly two hours.

King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Abdullah on Thursday rebuked the government for misleading Parliament on the annulment of emergency ordinances, but Muhyiddin insisted his administration didn’t violate the constitution.

The White House seems to be playing catch-up on coronavirus messagingThe Biden team has struggled to respond to the evolving pandemic dynamic, and to abrupt policy directives from public health officials within the administration itself. If Twitler didn't screw it up in the first place, we'd all be way ahead of the game and Biden wouldn't be picking up the pieces. It was a complete mess when he got in office and had to find his way though the muck that Jabba the Gut left scattered around the country. Catch up my ass. A pandemic is a thing in flux. Why are you so intent on stirring up crap that's not even there? It is simple! Mandate getting the vaccination and the use of masks until the virus is eradicated for public health. Americans have excepted mandates throughout history. Seat belts, texting or drinking while driving, yelling fire in a theater, cross walking, smoking indoors, etc.
