“When we started our business, veganism was almost an unknown concept,” says Fry. “South Africa is a country with a meat-centric culture, which meant that we were operating in a very small niche. We grew slowly and steadily, developing our own technologies. And yet now, with the rise in demand for plant-based foods, we find ourselves competing against some of the biggest food companies in the world for shelf space in supermarkets and attention from consumers.
To aspiring entrepreneurs, Terris offers this advice. “Hire and surround yourself with values-aligned people. Talent is outweighed by working with people who obsessively believe in what you are building.”The Very Good Butchers “I wanted to create something that I could feel good about feeding my family while keeping the impact on the environment and harm to fellow living creatures low,” Davison says. “Our first product, Very British Bangers, was born because all I wanted was a homey plate of bangers and mash, but there was nothing plant-based that met the mark, so I took the matter into my own hands.”
