Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy addresses rumors that Rey Skywalker was originally supposed to be Obi-Wan Kenobi's descendant. Star Wars is expanding its small screen footprint with its next Disney+ series which will feature Ewan McGregor's return as Obi-Wan Kenobi. But, this has also reignited conversations about rumors of the legendary Jedi Master's supposed ties to the Star Wars sequel trilogy.
Not long after Disney acquired Lucasfilm, the House of Mouse kickstarted a new Star Wars trilogy that introduced a string of fresh protagonists and antagonists. It was clear, however, that the sequel's primary lead was Daisy Ridley's Rey — a Force-sensitive scavenger living alone on Jakku before she was roped into the battle between the Resistance and First Order. Rey's identity was one of the major mysteries of the sequels.
The bigger issue is talking about Obi-Wan as a Master Jedi, and the issue of attachment and selflessness. In order for Obi-Wan to have a child, you are really, really impacting the rules around the Jedi. What does that mean? If that were explored—and certainly there were a lot of ideas being thrown around—but anything to do with Obi-Wan in that regard was pretty much off the table because it flies in the face of everything George created in the mythology. We’re not rigid about it.
As exciting as it is to think of the possibility that Rey and Obi-Wan are related, Kennedy actually makes a great point here. Throughout his appearances in Star Wars, Obi-Wan has always proven that he is a stickler for the rules. In Star Wars: The Clone Wars, he was hopelessly in love with Duchess Satine Kryze, but never really made any move to act on it because of his sworn Jedi code. It's difficult to imagine that he would ultimately turn his back and father a child with someone else.
Would it have been better if Rey ended up being a Kenobi? It's difficult to tell, but considering how badly received the revelation of her Palpatine connection was, not to mention Rey becoming a Skywalker in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the public may be more accepting of her proposed Obi-Wan Kenobi ties.
Oh but bringing back Palpatine doesn’t basically undue the entire OT and PT trilogy. Destroying Vader/Anakin’s arc
Jedi Code never says that a Jedi can't have sex or have children. It only speaks of forming attachments.
Well, in September 2020, Daisy revealed that yes, Rey was going to be a Kenobi in the first drafts of the sequels 👀
But didn’t Anakin break those same rules
Glad they didn't do that. Her being a descendant of the most powerful Sith Lord and choosing to stick to the light. Made for a great story. She found her place herself as the legacy of the skywalkers BRING HER THE HELL BACK
Thank goodness that didn’t happen. Rey’s story is about self-discovery and self-determination. Giving her a good lineage undermines the whole point of her character. “The belonging you seek is not behind you. It is ahead!”
It would have made more sense than her being Palpatine’s granddaughter, or whatever the heck the daughter of a failed clone is to him!
This was my original fan theory. But then again... My other fan theory
he had a kind of relationship slash flirting relationship in clone wars. after the jedi fall he 100% could have had a child or something. seems like she isnt a fan of the star wars content that she doesnt stick her fingers in
But it’s ok to make her Palpatine’s granddaughter?
Didn’t bother her when Ruin was screwing around with the Lore🤷♂️
